Glucose Test Question

I did my 1 hour glucose test this past week and I found out that it came back high. They told me that this may not mean that I have gestational diabetes but I will have to come back in on Friday and take another glucose test which will be a 2 hour one to make sure. Even though this came back a little high they want me to eat like I'm diabetic for the rest of the pregnancy.

So my question is those who have had this happen what are the chances that you failed the second one and are diagnosed with gestational diabetes?

I didn't have any of this happen with my first child so I'm really shocked and hoping nothing wrong/bad happens with this baby.

Thanks everyone!

I failed my 1 hr this time by 7 pts (passed in my first pregnancy), and passed the 3 hour by 15-20 pts for each blood draw. GL!

Do you still have to eat like you are a diabetic?

I failed the 1 hour by 4 points, and passed the 3 hour no problem. I think my OB was surprised I passed the 3 hour because of the weight I'd gained early on in pregnancy. LOL

It was suggested to me to eat according to the GD eating guidelines for the majority of the rest of the pregnancy. If it comes back and you aren't diabetic, I would suggest eating according to the guidelines, but not beating yourself up if you don't for a day or so here and there. Like, give yourself a day where you eat whatever you want.

High proteins, lower carbs. That's basically all you need to focus on, should you not have GD, but want to follow the guidelines. A lot of women here are REALLY helpful as far as eating plans and ideas go! :)

I failed my one hour by 5 points. But passed my three hour. Why do they want you to be on a diabetic diet before they even test you again?

If you fail the 1 hour but go on to pass the 2 or 3 hour some Dr's will treat you as though you have impaired glucose of pregnancy.  Not diabetic but you body needs help processing glucose properly through diet.

I failed my 1 hour but passed my 2 hour.  My midwife has me check my blood sugar after meals and at fasting just to make sure that my levels don't change later in pregnancy.

I've been following the GD diet for the most part but like Riskay said too if it comes back you aren't diabetic you don't have to beat yourself up over a slip up day or two!

The one hour test has a high rate of false positives and is a screening, not a diagnostic test. Only 4% of women have GD so your chances are still good.

I failed the one hour and passed the three hour. My doctor did tell me my last draw was a little high and my hemoglobin count was .1 over normal range. She did not tell me to eat like a diabetic but told me because the last number was high I'm at a higher risk for diabetes after pregnancy (it does run in my family so I'm not surprised).

For the first time out of four pregnancies I failed the one hour test by I think 4 points.  I then took the three hour and passed along with my doctor testing my AC1 levels which were within the normal range.  Despite passing the three hour, my doctor did tell me to try and stick with more protein and less carbs.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then success with condoms! Who would ever have guessed.

They made me take it during my 1st Tri b/c of concerns over my weight and family history.  First one hour came back close enough that they sent me for a three hour test, which I passed.  Now that I'm in my 3rd Tri, they sent me back to make sure my levels are still okay.  The one hour came back close again, so they sent me for yet another three hour.  Passed the three hour, so I'm good.  But I'm sure my dr will still tell me to watch what I eat.

Best of luck to you on this!
