What's wrong with sibset being "matchy"

DS is Mason and we are due with DD in January.  We have a name: Mabry.  This thrills me because we had no name for DS until we were at the hospital.

Our only hang up is that it's too "matchy", but I'm not sure why this bothers me.  So play Devil's advocate for me...what's the big deal?

Thanks!!

I don't think it's a big deal at all.  Those names are cute together!  Remember that the women on this board are ultra critical and a lot of things don't matter at all in real life IMO.

Yes, but the As at the beginning of Asher and Amelia make different sounds.  The beginnings of Mason and Mabry sound the same.

Its not about having the same initial.  I don't think Mason and Mabry are bad if you can't find anything that compares to Mabry.

My issue isn't even with initials, but it bugs me if people PURPOSELY choose names based on initials even though they might like a name better or if they go with a theme like Rose, Violet, Forrest, River, and Lilac.  Another thing would be if they rhymed...like my SS name is Kane so Shane, Blaine, Raine, Lane would NOT even be considered.  Im not all like "sibsets have to match" its moreso that you go with what you like HOWEVER if you name one child a very obscure name or a youneek name and name the other John, I'd be a little ticked off about being the child with the often misspelled and misprounced name.  My boy names probably don't go together or would work for everyone as a set, but when you have two people naming a child with different styles, sometimes it so happens you find common grounds on some random names that don't always "mathc".

There's nothing wrong with it if you like it.

Themed or rhyming names get a little cheesy.  Using all of the same letters in the initials can be sweet, but it's all just NMS.  This is by far the least offensive naming trend, IMO.

I'm not a fan of rhyming sibling names or name pairs like Harmony and Melody, Summer and Autumn, etc.

Names that start with the same letter are fine by me, but its not something I'd go out of my way to do.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the first initials being the same.

That being said I would like my childrens names to go together nicely but not be overly matchy. So I wouldn't go for a theme and I tend to stay away from names that start with the same letter but that is just personal preference. I don't really think it's a big deal.

Mason and Mabry don't set my teeth on edge. The repeated Ma- is somewhat cutesy, but not fatal. If kid #3 is Maisie, it would start to tip into overly saccharine.

I recently encountered a family with a daughter named Elise and a son named Elias. So similarities obviously don't bother everyone.

Those don't bother me too much. I have a friend named Karr.ing.ton. Her sister is Kerr.i.gan. Minus the periods of course. That is a bit matchy to me.

Hmmm... thanks?  I'd argue that this is true of The Bump, The Nest, The Knot and anything else anyone is passionate about.

I think Mason and Mabry match due to the same Ma- beginnings.  It's not a big deal - if you love the name, go for it!

I try to avoid matching initials because I grew up with a lot of families that did this and I just thought it was cheesy.  It's just a personal thing though.

If you mean giving opinions when asked for them and pointing out potential hang-ups and future issues for the child then I guess we are just a bunch of ultra critical bia!ches.  If you love a name then go for it, why ask for opinions on an internet board and than get your pants in a bundle that we point out that it is the same name as a famous serial killer or that the initials spell out A$$?

Thanks everyone!  I wanted to bounce the idea off on neutral ground because I know not everyone IRL would be completely honest.  DH and I have COMPLETELY different naming styles so the fact that we can agree on one is so fantastic it makes me not care that it is somewhat matchy.

My MIL's name is Rae, and her brother's name is Ray. You want to talk about matchy, that drives me crazy and I think it is just ridiculous.

Yours, on the other hand, I don't have a problem with. I think it is cute that they go together but they aren't so similar that it is going to be confusing or just weird.

No, people just don't generally tell you IRL when they think your names are stupid, they say it behind your back.

OP, I think those names are fine together. I mostly just dislike rhymey, like Katie and Sadie. Or in your face themey, like PP mentioned above, Harmony and Melody.

I actually don't think it's all the matchy. I think some people don't like matchy names because it can ring a little cheesy, and sometimes confusing when people are saying the kids names. That said, Mabry doesn't exactly sound like a real name.

Because when you're yelling at your kids you want them to know which one you're talking to.  And not sound dumb stuttering over your kids' names.  However, honestly we will probably all stutter over them anyway.  I'll now start to yell at the kid and call him the dog's name.  They sound nothing a like.

Lol.  My mom always has called my brother the dog's name. There have been different dogs over the years and brother is always called the current dog's name.

My siblings and I all have the same first letter.  My parents swear it wasn't on purpose.  I side-eye them a bit -- two of us also have the same initials.  All have a different sound (uh, ah, ay).

I think your names are fine together -- as long as a third doesn't enter into the same "Ma" sound.

I'm hoping to avoid cheesy.  And yes, Mabry, is a rare name.  Where I'm from it's a last name, but not super common.  I just like how southern it sounds, and different.  But I have questioned DSs more common name in comparison.  I promise I didn't make it up!

I don't think it's too matchy. A bit, but in a cute way, not in an I'm obviously trying to match the names. If you chose Macy as your DD's name, that would be too much. But Mabry is cute!

We plan to be a little matchy by using all the same initial.  Its actually a tradition on both our mother's sides that we are continuing.
