Honest opinions/names that mean something substantial

2 questions...

Thoughts on Asher? I LOVE LOVE the meaning.

Suggestions for other boy names that have great meanings?

1. I like Asher as well. Strong, but not harsh.

2. Which meaning is the one you like? When I hear Asher, I think of the Biblical Asher, who was the son of Jacob's slave, Zilpah. Many historians and textual scholars think that his name derives from Asherah, the goddess worshipped by many Middle Eastern peoples before the birth of Judaism. I love that, but I am neither Christian nor Jewish, so using the name of a "pagan" goddess is a plus for me.

Not too sure! Thanks for the lesson regardless:) I just like that the name itself means happy and blessed.

If you are on the search for a name that means Happy, then try behindthename.com. On the left hand side there is a link that will take you to the "name themes" page. It has several themes. Good luck.

I was told that Asher was the name of one of the tribes of Isrealites (by someone who was named Asher so I assume he knew what he was talking about)

I mean, of all the sons of Jacob, Asher is definitely one of the good ones. So I'm not saying that the Biblical Asher is a negative. I just mean that if what you love best about the name is its meaning, be sure to read up on its origins (scholars dispute whether it is from the Hebrew term for happiness or from Asherah). In any case, it gets thumbs up from me.

I have an Asher. I loved that it meant "happy". I also have an Isaac which means "laughter". I think that's beautiful.

ooh, love Asher!

Ronen - means "song" or "joy" in Hebrew

David - means "beloved"

I love Asher!  It's a mess with our last name, or else I would have pitched it for DS.

1.  I'm not a fan of Asher.  It doesn't feel masculine to me at all -- not phonetically, nor in its spelling.  The trendiness really turns me off as well.  I don't like the meaning.  We are the farthest thing from religious, so the blessed portion really turns me off.

2.  I just don't care about the literal meaning of the names.  I like the sentiment of the names we used.

Until very recently, I had never heard the name.  A distant relative on DH's side named their son Asher.  At first it sounded a bit odd but I must say it's grown on me.

Honestly, the only time the meaning of a name really comes into play is in the naming process.  Have you ever heard a 20 year old say, "My name is ____, which means ____?"

Pick a name you like and if it has a nice meaning, that's a bonus.  Just don't let that be a primary factor.

Asher is fine.

This exactly. It looks and sounds weak and soft. It's so trendy too, which makes me like it even less. Something people either don't know or don't care about is the fact that little kids can't say 'sh' very well, so this name becomes Ass-er. We have tons of little Ass-ers in our neighborhood.

Felix means happy and blessed too, and it's more masculine. Better name all around imo.

To each their own. I'd rather my child's name mean somethng substantial. Since I am spiritual, I believe that words do not come back void. My name means fortunate, so I feel like when people say my name they are saying that I am fortunate...

I do like Asher. But its getting wildly popular.

We scaled it back a step and went with Ash for many reasons. :)

I have loved the name Asher since I read "The Giver" in 5th grade. I have been trying to convince my husband that it really is a good name and we should use it for a boy, but he won't budge. not even for a MN.

NMS plus it reminds me of Ash, which reminds me of Pokemon, which granted wouldn't be the association for most people but doen't sit well with me.
