Baby-friendly vehicles

Right now I have a low 2-door car... not baby friendly.  We're going car shopping pretty soon, and I just wanted to get others' input about the type of vehicle or even a specific vehicle that is recommended.  I'm going to be a FTM and we're planning on having 2 kids.  I definitely don't want a minivan or anything too big.  I'm used to driving sedans/coupes, and I see no problem w/ a sedan, but DH swears that I will hate it.  He has a Hyundai Santa Fe.  I'm fine with driving that, but it still seems a little big to me (even though my car is quit a bit longer than his).

So, what's your pick: sedan, crossover, SUV?  Any makes & models in particular?

You can absolutely get away with a sedan, even with two kids.  But I went with a crossover (CR-V) and even with one kid, I'm really happy I did.  When we travel to my ILs' we needed to take LOTS of crap with a baby and I was happy for the trunk space.  The other thing that really sold me on the CR-V was the bi-level trunk.  It has a removable shelf so you can have the stroller on the bottom and then have a flat, even surface for things like groceries.

I got a small SUV two years ago this month and now we are looking at minivans. It was dumb of me to get the small SUV. It's very cramped with a RF carseat and stroller in the trunk. My DH is very tall and he barely fit in the car when DD was RF. I can't imagine how cramped it would be with an infant seat and DD's convertible. So keep in mind when you are shopping that you will need to fit 2 carseats eventually. Take an infant seat with you, it's hard to visualize how much room they take up.

We had a Santa Fe as well and bought a Volvo S80. There's literally more room in that thing than in our SUV (obv minus the whole back storage) but as far as leg/seat room, it's amazing. My DD is still rear facing in her convertible seat behind the passenger seat and that seat can recline almost all the way back. The RF infant seat fits perfectly on the other side with a flip down console between them that holds a DVD player. I honestly don't ever want to think about getting rid of our car!

I have the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, its a small crossover that drives like a car. I wanted 4-wheel drive being in MN. I also wanted it to be able to hold two large dogs comfortably and still have space to spare. We have put the carseat in it and it works out very well actually. Its an affordable car that had all the basics I wanted. I have had no issues with it and I have had the car almost 2 years now.

Picking a car is such a personal preference situation - but I would just caution you that rear facing carseats take up ALOT of room.  A vehicle you previously considered large gets small really fast once you add a child and all their stuff.  I would recommend taking the carseat with you when you car shop.

I would also caution against any car with large rear doors.  The logistics are rough when your in a tight parking space and you have to get a kid out but you can barely squeeze through the door!

Happy Shopping!

I really like the suggestion of taking a carseat with you when you shop, it may seem silly but it can make a huge difference. I had a Honda Civic up until last year, DD is 3.5 now. I won't lie, it was a pain. DH is tall so he couldn't fit in the car if she was in it so we drove his truck as a family. Getting that low and lugging the seat out got old (and heavy) and then when I finally moved her to the side  since the convertible seat wouldn't fit in the middle I would occasionally bump her head because I couldn't see down that low.

We lived in Chicago for a year through work and had a string of rental cars that they paid for so it was great to get to try some out, we had a Dodge Nitro and a Hyundai Santa Fe and those were better for reaching in with her. We just bought an Acadia about a year ago and I love it. I know you said you don't like big cars so it's probably too big- but we also drove the Chevy Equinox and the GMC Terrain (pretty much the same car) and they both have middle seats that slide forward/back which held with the size of your carseats. They also both have a good amount of storage in the back, but don't 'feel' like a big car.

We recently bought a 2006 Ford Fusion SEL and love it. It has so much space in the back. Definitely big enough for a family of 4.

I have had small cars my entire life and we just switched to a Nissan Murano and I LOVE it! It doesn't feel big at all and it's not hard to park. I have experienced some problems with blind spots but it just forces you to actually move your body to check for cars which isn't necessarily a bad thing

I got a Toyota rav 4 last year and I love. Can't comment yet on how it works with kids but plenty of trunk space!

I drive a rolling couch. It is a sedan. I have a huge back seat area (I can easily fit 3 car seats), huge trunk, and lots of room. However, they don't make my car anymore. Though my housemates car is like the newer model of it and has some pretty awesome features too and we can easily fit the seats in his car too. He drives a Chrysler 300, I drive a 2001 Chrysler Concorde. So a huge mom mobile.

I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee with DD and while it was nice to have lots of space, I found it hard to get the car seat in and out of the middle of the backseat b/c I am pretty petite. I traded it in and got a Honda CR-V and I LOVE IT!! It's still really spacious but not too big. The gas mileage is pretty good (I average 27 MPG). It should fit two car seats just fine with room for the dog in the middle.

I have an '05 Rav 4 (so not the nicer slightly bigger ones) and it has been great for one kiddo, but we're pretty sure two is going to be pushing it.  And I HATE getting DD in and out of a sedan.  So I would suggest a crossover or an SUV.

We have DD behind the passenger seat in my car, and even forward facing, I'm cramped in the front seat if I give her enough room in terms of safety.

I drive a 2011 Hyundai sonata and I really love it! So far it's just my son in the back but I've put my neighbors little boy back there as well and there was still plenty of room in the middle. There is a ton of leg room and the trunk easily fit our double stroller plus room for other cargo.

My husband drives a 2006 jeep grand cherokee and while there is plenty of storage in the back, there is not much leg room for the back seat.

I just bought a nissan murano SL and adore it! It's not too big so it wasn't a huge adjustment going from a sedan. GL!
