husband started accutane..

Hi there, my husband recently started taking accutane and I know that its very dangerous for women and causes terrible birth defects, but the docs all seem to think there is no problem with him taking it even though his wife is very much pregnant...all have said its not a concern as long as I am not taking it.

I have been sort of treating him like hes radioactive, but i just feel like (tmi) if we share bodily fluids and its active in his system than it could have some affect on me and baby?

Maybe im paranoid, just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue....

"The docs" (notice the plural) vs "anonymous message board posters".

If the "Docs" say it's ok, then chill out!  I don't see the big deal in it either... he is using it, not you.

Yup, this. There are plenty of other things that can cause major defects an miscarriages that he could be ingesting. If the docs are ok with it, then you're good.

Ok, everyone's joking but I'll share my experience. Dh wasn't on accutane, but he was getting chemotherapy through September and chemo meds are considered dangerous to fetuses' as well and are present in bodily fluids. We actually didn't share a bed or bathroom during this time, but doctors said that we COULD, it just depended on our comfort level. They said for him to always flush the toilet with the lid down, and wash his hands carefully.

We also used condoms until we were confident that the drugs were out of his system.

Again, not the same meds. I honestly found that most doctors were clueless about secondhand effects for pregnant women. I had to contact a LOT of people to get a straight answer about what was and wasn't safe.

Chemo meds are probably more potent in smaller doses than accutane, but if you feel more comfortable using a condom, do it. We were specifically told to use condoms by DH's oncology nurses because the meds would be present in his semen and the baby would be exposed during sex.

So there's that.

I would trust the doctors, but use a condom if it still worries you.

I wouldn't risk it. There's a warning on medline.

 For male patients:

A very small amount of isotretinoin will probably be present in your semen when you take prescribed doses of this medication. It is not known if this small amount of isotretinoin may harm the fetus if your partner is or becomes pregnant. Tell your doctor if your partner is pregnant, plans to become pregnant, or becomes pregnant during your treatment with isotretinoin.

Accutane is some seriously nasty stuff, so while I certainly am not a doctor I do see your concerns as valid.

Luckily Accutane is not topical, and nowhere near as potent as chemo. I would follow the doctor's recommendations but if you are really uncomfortable I see nothing wrong with having him wear a condom while intimate. I certainly wouldn't worry about kissing or anything, though.

No one is questioning the concern.

People are questioning the decision to seek medical advice on an anonymous internet message board after she already has the go ahead from more than one doctor.

Usually the typical answer is "consult your dr" and she already has. :P

That's ridiculous - people often ask other people for information even if their doctors are on-board. For instance, on induction, testing etc.

I wouldn't worry.  And I worry about everything.  I'd be more worried for his personal health/safety.

No, you are ridiculous. When you ask a group of strangers on an online forum about, say, an induction, you're going to get several different opinions and experiences, as every person is different. This is why they ask average people; doctors can give the medical information, and other women can give experience. When it comes to something like this, the medical information from a trained professional is what is needed. The "How did the epidural make you feel?" questions are subject to the person (who has experienced this feeling, rather than the question, "What does the medication do exactly?"), whereas the, "Am I overreacting because I don't want to trust my doctors but I want to trust strangers on the internet."

Hi, thanks for the feedback, i realize it sounds paranoid but I appreciate those that had somewhat similar experiences and share what they did tor didnt do.

I plan on listening to the docs but its the support I suppose I was looking for since i still dont feel totally comfortable which is what brought me to post this on the board.

Sometimes you just need someone to say its ok to feel that way despite docs telling you its fine and so for the time being condomes it is!!

Thanks!

On a somewhat unrelated note, my husband took Accutane in his teenage years and it is a serious, crazy drug.

He was actually part of that lawsuit because it ended up giving him crohn's disease. And I thought that it was still outlawed for them to sell it..but it's been a while so maybe they've changed it.

Either way I would honestly suggest having him look into other treatments. Having clear skin is not worth effing up your intestines imo.
