uh oh. mil trouble.

i got myself into quite a tricky situation today. okay, let me explain.

i have been looking for cute christmas dresses for my little baby girl's first christmas for about a month now. they come out really early and i didn't want to end up with something i didn't like after they were all picked over! well, my mom went to the osh kosh b'gosh outlet and found a beautiful dress and wanted to get it for my baby girl. after seeing pictures i said, "yes! get it!"

then i remembered my mil wanted to make a dress for my baby's first christmas. actually, i remembered today when she called to say she wasn't going to make one because her time is limited, so now she is going to buy her one. and asked me if this was okay.

well, she lives far away and doesn't get to be super involved and she seemed like she really wanted to do this. in fact, once she reminded me, i remembered her mentioning this in september! i felt awful, so i just sad, "yes, absolutely you can get her christmas dress!". now i don't know what to do. i love the dress my mom bought and i want her to wear it. also, i think my mom was just as excited to be able to buy her granddaughter her first christmas dress...

what do i do? i don't want to offend or hurt anybody! what would you guys do??

This would be me. Have her spend half the day in one dress and half the day in the other.

Take pictures in each dress. Problem solved.

Use one of Christmas Eve and one on Christmas? Use one the morning of and change mid day? She's a baby so I'm sure she will need an outfit change sometime Christmas Day anyway :o

Are you spending the holiday with both your mom and your MIL at the same time?

If not, your DD wears the dress your mom got when you are with your family, and the one your MIL gets/makes when you are with them.

If that doesn't apply and you're not seeing either the day of, pictures in both.

yes we'll see my mil after christmas (they live 10 hours away) but i wasnt sure if it's tacky to have her wear her christmas dress with her after christmas..? also i didnt know if it's not as special for my mil for her dress to be worn a different day. you know, sort of like i'm choosing my mom over her?

i'm overthinking this, aren't i? haha

Get and use both.  She'll probably throw up on one anyway.

Definitely use both!  One for each side of the family, Christmas Eve & Christmas Day, etc.

Play it up by saying something like "DD is so lucky to have two grandma's that love her so much and both want to make her look beautiful for her first Christmas"

I would just use both.  Our LO doesn't have a problem making a mess of his outfits as soon as we put them on him anyway...

He had 2 halloween costumes which I was upset about at first, but he wasn't in his winnie the pooh halloween costume for more than an hour before he had a poop explosion and got it all in his pants...so we had a back up tigger costume for him.  It ended up coming in handy. :)

yep.  Consider how your MIL might feel if she didn't get to see your LO in the dress she got, whether in pictures or in person.  I don't think she will care if it's on a different day!

If you want, put her in that dress first on Christmas day, take a picture, then switch outfits.  Then have her wear it again when she sees MIL.

Just because it's a different day doesn't mean you're not celebrating the holiday!

Use both. Your DD could be fabulous and have a wardrobe change mid-day.

And take lots and lots of pics of her in both dresses to send to each grandma.

Use both.  Babies spit up and have blow outs all the time.  It will be nice to have more than just one nice outfit for Christmas.

Honestly.....it's just a dress.  It's no reason to get into family drama over.

I totally agree. Use both outfits so they are both included, but that should really be the end of it. If anyone complains or is unhappy with how it works out, remind them that Christmas is about family not about clothes. Don't let all the little details overwhelm your little girl's first Christmas. Keep it simple and enjoy this special time with your daughter.
