car seat fit

I do not know where I heard this or if it is true. If the seat is in the middle can the back of the seat (car seat that is) be hitting the back of the seats in the front of the car? I thought I heard there has to be an inch? We are currently trying to find a seat that will fit in DH Santa Fe. Our infant seat makes it so we do not take his car anywhere as a family due to it making the passanger seat where I sit be to close to the front of the car. I would rather find a seat that fits and we can all be in the car comfortably than get a new car, and my car is getting the miles packed on when we take it on all of our trips back home.

DH and I are both tall. I am thinking a Graco Myride or an evenflo Symphony. I looked on carseat . com but they do not have our year. I need to go to bru and try them in the car. I just want him to be rearfacing for as long as possible. He is alredy 27 inches at 4 months. I just want to see the black Friday deals and possibly get him a seat for christmas from his grandparents. He is also 16 lbs.

I printed a huge comparison chart on all of the seats and these seem to be the best for tall kids and are still comfortable.  Any thoughts? TIA!

I think it depends on the seat. I know that the EU RF seats are different for each seat, ours can and it's actually recommended to touch the seat in front of it so if there is an accident it is pushed into the seat in front. Others (I think it's the Britax over here) state that there has to be a gap between the seat and the car seat.

I'd take the car to the store and check them out.

I have a Santa Fe at the moment and we just got a new car because of the seat issue, now with number 2 on the way we need a car that my 6ft plus DH can drive with DD behind him in her RF seat...not the Santa Fe!

That is what I was afraid of. You would not think you would have so many problems with this car! DH is 6'3 and I am 5'9 so we will pretty such have to get a new car to fit car seats in.

Check your car manual, some cars allow carseats to touch, some do not. I agree with the myride, though maybe a radian will fit in the middle?

I would scratch the Symphony off your list right off the bat, because while it is a great seat, it is not a long lasting rear-facing seat. You can only use it rear-facing in the bottom two headrest positions, so while it will get most kids to two, you probably won't get much past that will tall child/long torso.

You could look at the Graco My Size 70/Size 4 Me 70. It is currently the tallest rear-facing seat on the market, and you can find it around $150. However, that being said some people are having issues with it, so if you buy it definitely keep your receipt. The same goes for the My Ride though, because MANY people are having issues with the buckle sticking, etc.

Graco is currently working on the issues with the S4M/MS70, which is about the extent of what I can say. So, if you have time, I might suggest waiting and seeing what happens.

As far as touching the seats in front, there isn't 1" rule that I know of. It depends on the seat. You are normally ok if you can slide a piece of paper between the car seat and the seat in front of it. Britax allows touching but not bracing.

I would definitely go to BRU and try them out. :)

I remember hearing the 1" rule when I was pregnant with my oldest, but I haven't heard about it since. Some carseats do allow touching and diono allows bracing on the front seat. One thing that will help a lot, though, is that once your baby is a bit older and has very good head control you can install the convertible seat more upright, which will help a lot with front to back space in the car.

The caveat to being allowed to touch/brace is that not all cars allow it because of airbag sensors. In my 2006 beetle I can touch/brace on the driver seat but not on the passenger seat. Haven't looked yet in my honda pilot as we have 2 forward facing kids and just bought this car. That information will be in your owner's manual.

I am pretty sure (although I live in Canada), that the car seat CAN'T touch anything.  If it is touching the front seat it won't take the impact in an incident where there is an accident.  Read your owner's manual on your vehicle.

A great car seat is the Britax's.  Great car seats and worth every penny!
