Very Upset at Endocrinologist & Nervous about my Pregnancy

So, a few weeks before I conceived my doctor found nodules on my thyroid.  I was advised not to conceive and I thought my husband and I were good; watching the calendar, but naturally we ended up conceiving.  I had a biopsy 2 days before I found out at my regular yearly with the OBGYN that I was pregnant.  So, although I am thrilled, another part of me is feeling guilty because of my thyroid.

After the biopsy my endocrinologist said he was going on vacation so instead of the normal 5 day wait, I had to wait 2 weeks.  Then he called yesterday and left a message that my cysts were benign and all was good.  I was so relieved and finally feeling the excitement I should about my pregnancy.  Both, my husband and I were very happy.

Today I got a voicemail saying I needed to call the doctor.  He told me what he told me yesterday was wrong and that my largest cyst (I have multiples; the largest being 2.8mm) was inconclusive.  He needs to do another biopsy. . . IN 2 MONTHS!  I shared that I was currently pregnant and he said the bisopy wouldn't hurt the baby.  I get that, but now for the entire first trimester I have to worry about this cyst and my baby's health and my health impacting the baby.  I am so frustrated right now.  Any words of wisdom?  Does anyone else have nodules on their thyroids?  Has anyone undergone surgery or medication while pregnant?

i have nodules on my thyroid. Why did he biopsy them? did he say? My experience (with several docs) has beent that they sort of monitor the growth but just having them isn't a cause for concern. Only if they are large enough to effect swallowing or if their growth rate changes.

On another note most people with nodules also have a thyroid disorder? Have you been checked for hypo/hyper thyroidism?

I understand that this can all be very stressful, but I think you need to take a deep breath and relax. A biopsy is a pretty low-risk procedure in terms of pregnancy. And, unfortunately, mix-ups and lab mistakes can happen. The mistake may not have even been the fault of the endocrinologists. Lastly, too, you got pregnant AMA. That's on you.

I have perfect bloodwork, but one nodule is 28mm; they biopsy anything bigger than 10mm.  They do not feel it's hypo or hyper thyroidism.  Looking at my neck you can see the cyst; it feels the size of a kid's little bouncy ball.  I was told they needed to see me in four months, but now that there is this problem I am very concerned and worried moreso for my baby than myself.

I imagine that if they were extremely concerned about this cyst they would schedule your visit sooner. Try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy. T&Ps!

I would get a second opinion personally, or ask that the biopsy be done sooner.  No need to worry needlessly while you are pregnant.

Make sure your OB is checking your thyroid levels with each blood draw as well if your endocrinologist isn't checking them at least every 8 weeks while you are pregnant.

I have gotten a biopsy done on 2 nodules on my thyroid. However, they were found to be cancerous and I had my thyroid removed 4 months after giving birth to my first son.  I am now on synthroid every day, and it is completely safe during pregnancy.  It is better to get all the information you can now, rather than worrying and waiting.

After my DD was born, I had 2 nodules that were biopsied. One was fine, but the other was cancer. I had my thyroid removed when she was 8M old and have been on synthroid since.  My TSH levels were completely fine during pregnancy, but after she was born, my levels skyrocketed and that was their first signal that something was wrong.  My Endo told me that I eventually would have gotten cancer, but pregnancy hormones caused it to appear faster.

While pregnant with my DS and now this one, I have my levels checked every 4 weeks and adjust my meds accordingly.

Personally, if they wanted to do another biopsy, I would find out why they want to wait 2 months (is it scheduling or is it because they want to see if it grows/changes or some other reason). I'd get it done sooner if you can.

Thank you for all the advice.  I got a few other names, so tomorrow I can calling someone else for a second opinion. I think I'm nervous because this is our first baby, and all my life I have thankfully had near-to-perfect health.

I am sorry to hear Katelynsmom had thyroid cancer.  That must have been so scary with a new baby.  I am so happy you are doing better:-)

FYI the standard of care for inconclusive biopsies of thyroid nodules is to re-biopsy in 2-4 months and to follow the size of the nodule with serial ultrasounds. It sounds like this is what your endocrinologist is doing, so while you are free to get a second opinion it likely won't change.

Also, unless you would terminate your pregnancy if the biopsy was cancerous there really isn't a point in doing another biopsy earlier. The surgical and medical treatments for thyroid cancer are absolutely contraindicated with pregnancy.

All that being said, the likelihood of your nodule being cancerous is actually quite low. I wish you all the best for a healthy pregnancy!

A little late to this, but I had a nodule many years ago before getting pregnant and the biopsy was inconclusive. It ended up being benign, but it was a stressful time. Like PPs said, you could consider a second opinion if you have a bad feeling about the doctor or at least call the office back and ask for more explanation. The good part is that you are getting medical care for it.

And I know that there are bad doctors out there, but I've found in my experience that when a doctor is really concerned they will move FAST on diagnosis/treatment -- they don't tell you to wait 2 months if it's something they're worried about.

I hope you get it all sorted out and you're able to enjoy your pregnancy to its fullest!

Lurking, but I have Graves' Disease and just had a thyroidectomy. I'm not pregnant, but I am nursing and did a lot of research on thyroid treatments and lactation. Almost everything you read concerning medical treatments and lactation also has information on pregnancy. Luckily, many thyroid treatment options are safe. If your doctor recommends surgery, know that many many pregnant women undergo thyroidectomies. Feel free to PM me if you have questions about the procedure, recovery, etc., since I just went through it last month!
