Artificial sweeteners and a little GTKY

I've been trying to find reputable sources on the effect artificial sweeteners have on TTC. Most people seem to think they're a no-no, but I haven't seen anything too official-looking. What do you ladies do? To Splenda or not to Splenda?

Since it's a little slow 'round here today, what else do you consume more of/avoid as part of TTC?

I promise to never forget that this little dude deserves just as much love after the baby comes as he has now.

I suppose I should answer my own GTKY, except for the artificial sweeteners since I don't know what I'm supposed to do with those.

My TTC Diet includes:

- one serving of whole milk a day

- more dark green veggies

- pineapple with core during the 2WW

And I avoid:

- non-fat milk

- more than one serving of soy a day (annoying because I'm vegetarian)

- caffeine (not that hard because I don't really drink it anyway...it makes me cray-cray)

I promise to never forget that this little dude deserves just as much love after the baby comes as he has now.

I try to avoid artificial sweeteners but not because of TTC. I have not been able to find a great source I just go off of how I feel and also the taste. If you're looking for an alternative I don't thing stevia is too bad. Im pretty picky and i actually like that, its all natural and has zero calories. It is really sweet though so if you try it start with a little and add on. First time I used it like I would regular sugar in my plain yogurt and I spit it out haha.

I also have limited caffeine to one cup... Although I'm not a nut and If I want another I'll have it. I don't think you need to go crazy with avoiding a lot of things you usually have while TTC.

No clue on sweetener just that I've heard it isn't the greatest for anyone to consume. Never looked into it because I don't use it on a normal basis.

Adding
green tea
Pineapple / pineapple core

Avoiding

I've heard to cut back on sugar but not heard about artificial sweetners. I'm also trying to cut out caffeine but I'm addicted to Dr. Pepper =\ I figure as long as I drink at least 24oz of water for every 12oz of soda I'll be ok...that's how I justify it. ;] lol

Taking:

Green Tea Extract to increase CM, so far it's working!

Drinking LOTS of water!

2000mg of EPO daily to increase CM

Avoiding:

Peas (I've heard they're really bad for TTC! Don't know if it's true but I don't like them so it's a good excuse)

Attempting to avoid:

Caffine

Sugar

I switched from splenda to truvia, because that is supposed to be more "natural," but to be honest I don't really know much about it.

I try to avoid diet pop, but I still have it sometimes in mixed drinks if we are out cause I would rather have that than all the sugar calories.

This is for my health in general, I don't consume more or less of anything specifically for TTC.  Except a prenatal vitamin.

I have a little Splenda in my coffee every morning.  I love my coffee and I refuse to quit it, unless my doctor says I absolutely have to give it up.

I usually always tried to eat healthy, so I'm not really trying to do anything different with my diet since I'm TTC.

I'm also on the "drink 'til it's pink" bandwagon.

Disclaimer: I'm also only on month 2, I'm sure I'll probably change my tune once I hit month 6, 7, 8, etc....

I avoid caffeine (for anxiety reasons as well) but can not give up my soda. I stick to the light/clear sodas and I make sure they say no caffeine...I just can't give up soda. I did it for two years and it made me lose 10 pounds within the first month. On my tiny frame, it was way noticeable.

I try to eat healthier (she says while eating Lays Limon chips...) but I think that as long as I'm eating 3-4 meals, I'm good. LOL.

Well, I use pads instead of tampons while TTC. While in college, my anatomy and physiology professor said that tampons interrupt the natural flow of blood and my periods have gone from 7 days to 5.

I don't know if it helps with TTC, but I do it anyway.

It's probably not bad. It does contain estrogen, which could monkey with your hormones, but you'd have to be consuming a lot of soy to get the effect. Most of the articles I've read advocate both partners limiting their intake because of the phytoestrogen. Sorry, I'm at work and can't find a good source at the moment.

I started a low-carb no-sugar diet about a year ago to lose weight, and have used Splenda all along as my sweetener of choice - I don't use a lot of it, mostly just in my tea.  I haven't quit my caffeine teas (the ones I do drink have considerably less caffeine than coffee anyways), and I drink lots of water besides so take in lots of fluids overall.  I eat lots of veggies/fruit in general, and try to get as much fish and chicken into my diet as I can as opposed to so much red meat.

I've heard that about tampons before too, that they don't properly absorb clots especially for those who might bleed more heavily, and so can lead to problems with proper flow and more severe cramping due to blockage.  I've always used pads myself, though, so can't really compare.

I take Splenda in my coffee, but I've considered switching to Truvia or one of the more "natural" ones. In small amounts (2-3 packets a day at maximum) I can't see it really causing an issue. As for coffee, I usually don't have more than two cups a day. I have been trying to eat healthier lately though.

I gave up artificial sweeteners/diet soda while ttc and continued even after I gave birth. imo chemicals like that are terrible for your body. I don't necessarily think one packet of splenda is going to prevent you from getting pregnant or causing a birth defect but for me it was something easy to give up and wasn't worth the risk.

The only time I use splenda is in my morning coffee, and that is because of a taste preference and too much pure sugar and I get jittery.  Otherwise I don't eat anything that it's made with.  No diet drinks, no diet foods made with splenda, etc.

I have to be EXTREMELY careful with anything labeled "diet" because I am allergic to aspertame.  My mom drank it while pregnant with me and while nursing me, and it almost killed me.  It is highly toxic to babies.  And my mom did not over use it, maybe one diet coke per day or two.

Now, even the smallest sip of a diet coke (like the drive thru gives me diet instead of regular) and I have almost instant migraine.  I drank about half a glass of diet lemonade one (without realizing it was diet, I thought the funky taste was because I had recently brushed my teeth) and I ended up with a horrible kidney infection.  The Dr said if I were to drink even just two or three glasses of it, I probably would have gone into kidney failure.

I avoid artificial sweeteners, and have for years because frankly, why would I ingest anything with the word "artificial" in it? I also try to avoid artificial coloring, etc. but it's a little harder to do.

Besides, aspartame tastes disgusting to me, and Splenda makes me horribly ill.

Otherwise, nothing is off-limits, though I try to live my life in moderation most of the time.

I stopped artificial sweeteners at the beginning of the year.  I had a pretty bad diet coke vice, and knew I needed to kick it before trying to get pregnant.  And I hated being hooked on caffeine.  I have it very rarely now, and I use Truvia/Stevia for my tea and anything else for a sugar substitute (like on plain greek yogurt with fruit).  So, it wasn't completely for TTC reasons, but I'm glad I did it.

Question - what's with the full fat dairy thing?  I feel like I should know about it, but I don't.  Nonfat/lowfat dairy is pretty much a staple for me.  Should it not be?

We avoid artificial sweeteners almost 100% at our house. There have been a lot of questions raised about their safety/health, some true, some unfounded. Since I don't like the taste of them anyway, I have no problem avoiding them. We try to stay focused on eating "real foods", too, so that's part of it I guess.

I decided to cut out caffeine while TTC (since I plan on doing it when pg), and that lasted a whole 2 weeks before I got back on the coffee bandwagon at work. Embarrassed

I really need/want to cut down on sweets, too. Ugh, I'm major sucking at that goal. I love to bake, and need to find someone to share my goodies with that isn't my left hip and right hip.

Really, I think anything in moderation is fine with TTC. But some studies have linked difficulty TTC to low-fat dairy. Conversely, high-fat dairy is correlated with higher pregnancy odds. I really don't think you're going to be in trouble either way, but I'm just ultra careful because I'm anal like that.
