I have only been testing since last week so by no means an expert!! And hope to see some other good ideas!!  But I have been doing a lot of peanut butter and cheese. I am enjoying Peanut Butter with an apple for a snack and lots of cheese sticks.

You should definitely pose this question on the High-Risk pregnancy board...there are lots of us GD Moms on there and you can get all kinds of advice. Until you meet your dr and find out what your carb limits for each meal are, it's hard to give you specifics but know that protein will be your new best friend and you will need to watch the carbs you're having each meal...I can give you an example of what I ate today if that helps:

Breakfast (30 carbs or less) a whole grain bagel thin with laughing cow veggie cream cheese

Lunch (45-60 carbs) A McDonald's quarter pounder (no bun) med fries, and diet coke

Dinner (45 carbs or less) Shake and Bake buffalo chicken, broccoli, and potatoes o'brien (from a freezer bag)

You will also need to incorporate snacks between meals..at least one between each meal, but they told me I could eat every 2-3 hrs as needed. I get 15 carbs for a snack, so I can have 6 saltines with cheese, a nature valley protein bar, or a cup of milk

Finally, you will need a snack right before bed. My go-to snack is a tall glass of 1% milk with a tbsp of no sugar added Nestle chocolate drink mix. Make sure your nighttime snack has carbs AND protein, as it will be what controls your fasting sugar the next morning. Hope this helps, and like I said, check out the high-risk board

beans work really well for me...I can eat quite a lot and my sugars are fine afterward.  I've been making a lot of bean soups and chili.

I eat lots of nuts, cheese, and eggs, too.  Plus raw veggies and one fruit every day.

You don't have to eliminate carbs, you just get a limit. Mine is 45 for breakfast, 30 for snack, 60 for lunch, 30for snack, 60 for dinner, and then another 30 snack. My meals look kind of like this: breakfast bar, glass of milk and apple for breakfast. Morning snack is Greek yogurt and a cheese stick. Lunch is dinner leftovers or salad and pita bread with hummus. Afternoon snack is crackers with cheese. Dinner tonight was BBQ sandwich, green beans and some chips. Evening snack is 2 scoops of ice cream. Its not too bad but my whole day revolves around food and going out to eat can be difficult. They will explain everything when you get your meter I think.

I was just diagnosed GD a couple of weeks ago so am not an expert, but what I have found so far that is a big relief is that I actually do better when I have carbs in my diet, as long as they are from good sources! Everyone is different in terms of what works for them, but here is what I ate today:

Breakfast: 1 piece whole wheat toast with peanut butter, 1 hard boiled egg, 1 clementine

Snack: Greek yogurt, handful of roasted almonds

Lunch: 1 cup whole wheat spaghetti and red sauce w. peppers and ground turkey, 1 cup broccoli

Snack: cottage cheese with strawberries

Dinner: Baked chicken, green beans, quinoa

For me the best indicator of a meal that will give me a good blood sugar reading is a lot of fiber. I agree with pp that eating out can be difficult, but if its a chain most places have nutritional info online that I look at ahead of time to make sure I am staying in my carb limits.

(lurking from 2nd Tri)

I had GD with my pregnancy with DD. Losing/gaining isn't really the issue, the GD diet will slow down (or stop) weight gain just by the nature of the beast because you're properly balanced foods frequently enough to keep your blood sugars level. I gained 17lbs total with her and nearly all of that was weeks 18-24 until I got DX'd. Once I started the diet it slowed to a stand-still.

Are you meeting with a RD or nutritionist to go over your diet options? A lot of the ladies listed some really great guidelines. You are not eliminating carbs - they are needed - but you will be reducing your refined carbs and balancing them with proteins. For some women they will find some types of carbs will effect them more than others... for me it was rice. Anything rice shot my numbers through the roof. You'll find what works best for you.

Check the High Risk board out, even if you're not being labeled as high risk (my OB did not consider me such). There are lots of posts from other mamas who have GD.

I was per diabetic before pregnancy and now am on insulin. As far as the eating options go get creative . I usually have a protein shake for breakfast which is around 45 carbs snack I eat an Atkins protein bar or cheese 15 carbs lunch I have a peanut butter sand which with some granola or jello. Really dinner is open just keep your carb limits in mind and know when foods are bad for you the more meat and cheese the better also pickles jello protein mix low carb ice cream pretzels all work as snacks
