How do I keep my newborn safe while doing chores?

Hey guys; I am going to have my first 4/21/2013; I have two beautiful german shepherds who are great with kids, but are still big. I am afraid to put a newborn in a bouncy while I am doing chores like cooking because the dogs may knock over the bouncer accidentally, or may just be in the babies face a lot. I don't want to separate my baby from my dogs, but I am not sure what I can put my baby in besides a bouncer chair? Should I buy a small pack and play? Does anyone have ideas for me? I am thinking about the early evening when I am cooking dinner, I will need my hands free. Any ideas/tips???

Wear the baby. Put the dogs outside/in a different room/in a crate. IF you are right in the kitchen the whole time, I'd put the bouncer on the counter if it's big enough - but I know some will clutch their pearls at that. Gate yourself into the kitchen.

Pack n play or wear her in a wrap. I did dishes last night with my little girl in her boba wrap... this is a normal occurance as I have a 4 year old as well and do not have 8 arms, so I have learned to baby wear in all situations that are not dangerous (obviously not cooking over the stove or oven)

Like the pp said....wear the baby.  Or put the dogs outside.

I have a 110 pound pit mastiff.  If the baby is in the bouncy, I am in the same room.  Same goes for the swing.  If I really need to put him down somewhere and leave the room, he goes in the pnp or upstairs in his crib.

We bought a gate and just put that up so the dog wasn't in the same room, you could also put the bouncer in the pack and play. My son doesn't like to just lay there though so I need the vibrations or mobile.

Moby wrap. My LO wanted nothing to do with a bouncer or swing until he was 6 weeks old. Because they sleep so much that young you might be able to put him in a PNP. My lo was a preeme so he slept ALOT the first few weeks.

Thanks guys; I have a lot of baby gates, so I think I might just baby gate myself in to the kitchen. I feel bad separating my dogs from me, but baby has to be safe. I will try the wrap idea too, but not while I am cooking. I will try train my dogs to be gentle while I am around.

When my baby was that age she was on the floor/ playmat thing, or in the cradle in the family room ( bought just for the family room) or on the kitchen table in a bouncy seat while i cooked.

I bought one of these and I love it.  I take it when I go to peoples house and move it room to room while I clean.  It lays back like a bassinet but also has an option to use it more like a bouncer.  It has a netting that zips up to keep bugs out and works great to keep my dogs from sniffing at the baby.  Also there is some type of traction on the feet so you would need to hit it pretty hard to knock it over or move it especially on non-carpeted floors.  The only way I would not use this is if you think your dogs may paw at the netting and tear it.

Pack n Play, unless you think the dogs will jump up on it.

I wear DD while doing chores--it's great.  I use the Moby wrap.  She looks around for a while (so I feel like I'm getting her some activity/stimulation time) and then naps (so she gets a good nap in).  The only time I don't feel comfortable wearing her is if I'm cooking something that might spatter, like bacon :)  For cleaning, I was already using natural cleaners that didn't have nasty chemicals, but that's another thing I wouldn't want to wear her for.

Wearing your baby is a good idea, providing that your LO likes to be worn! My LO will sometimes tolerate being worn, but will often scream her head off when I try to put her in her wrap.

My advice is to play it by ear with the dog. I have an 80 lb German Shepherd, and I didn't want to separate her from us, but I also was really nervous about having LO in anything that was accessible to the dog. For the first few weeks, I prety much held LO if she was not in her pack and play or crib, and I honestly didn't get a whole lot done around the house (which is ok! paper plates and takeout are your friends!). The dog loves the baby, though, and is very gentle with her, so I realized after awhile that it would be fine to have the baby in the bouncy seat while I do dishes, prepare/eat a meal or take a shower (I put the bouncy seat right by the glass shower door so I can see her). The dog might come up and sniff or lick the baby, but that's NBD and she will back off when told to.

So, a lot depends on how your dogs do with the baby. Mine reacted as well as I could have ever hoped (she was very happy when the baby came home and has been an angel as far as interacting with LO and respecting her space and toys). Even so, I would never leave them alone in a room together. But, I have no problem having LO on the floor or in the swing or bouncy seat when the dog is in the room, as long as I am there too.

All good suggestions- except putting the bouncer on the counter.  Never put the baby on an elevated surface like that.  It's just creating an unnecessary risk and tempting fate.
