crib bumper?

I have heard mixed reviews on getting a crib bumper. I hear you need it and you dont.... What is right?

Crib bumpers can suffocate babies. There aren't many reported cases of this, but even one case is too many for me to ever consider using a bumper. They're obviously meant to keep LO from getting limbs caught between the crib rails... but that doesn't happen often, either--and it's certainly not fatal. They have breathable bumpers. They're not as cute, but they're not deadly--and they keep little arms and legs safe.

We use a breathable bumper. They are the best of both worlds if you want a bumper. Also, is it just me or is this asked every single day?

My question is, don't most babies start using their crib when they are bigger and able to move around more.  If they are able to move around then aren't they able to move their heads if god forbid that happened?

It is unnecessary and a suffocation risk. Sure, they're cute, but is it worth the risk?  We never used one, never even a breathable bumper, and DS got his leg stuck like 2x. It wasn't an issue for us.

Mine was in the crib from day one. It's not just the getting the head stuck by the bumper thing, bumpers also restrict air flow into the crib.

And yes this is asked every single day.

If you buy a cute crib skirt and sheet I think it looks just as good! I don't do them, if I did it would be to make the room look a certain way, my kids never got there hand and legs in the bars. If this baby does later on I will do the breathable mesh ones. When they are newborns they do not need them at all, they stay pretty much in the middle.

I started using the bumper at about 10 months, when DD had been crawling for awhile.  She would get her legs and arms stuck all of the time.  I would not have felt comfortable using it before then, but at that point she was also sleeping with her face smashed into the mattress, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Despite all the claims, I think it is a personal choice.  We didn't use one initally until DS would get stuck in the crib slats.  Then we used a breathable bumper.  My baby didn't roll around and we had a monitor on him which he slept - he would have been fine with a regular bumper.  But I didn't want to have that.

Oh sure NOW they have this. I liked the mod dot so much I bought it and chucked the bumper in the closet, where it's been sitting for 2.5 years. :P

We used a breathable bumper with DS. It's not as cute, but it's safer.

First I did no bumper/

Then I did breathable bumper.

now we have reg bumper.

I had so many issues, bumping heads, getting stuck.. the breathable didn't work for us. When she was small and not rolling using nothing was absolute best. Bumpers can lead to suffocation and are believed to have involvement in SIDS (don't quote me though)

I debated the bumper issue and lost sleep over it so very much. But getting legs stuck and bumping heads was just becoming too frequent that I put it on and eventually I calmed down. Once she got older it got easier suffocation and SIDS becomes "less" likely.

We have used a bumper from about 3 months. She moves around too much, and seems to like wedging her self in the corner. Even now at 2, she still gets limbs caught and sleeps with her head in the corner. After getting up 5 times one night to get her legs unstuck, we decided to put the bumper in.

I have also been toying with this idea...going back and forth.  In all honesty, I am probably going to use a bumper.  I've looked into WHY you shouldn't have one and WHY you should.  I've weighed the options and I really think that I am going to have one.

My DS has always had a crib bumper.  He slept in a bassinet swaddled for the first 4 months of his life but I think if I had him in his crib swaddled at that age I would've taken the bumpers out.
