Moira

Would you have trouble recognizing/pronouncing Moira?  My husband and I love the name, but he is convinced that no one will know how to pronounce it and so wants to use "Maura."  Thoughts?

Yes  I've liked Moira since it was a character in one of Robert Munsch's books.

No. I think it is pretty straightforward.

Love it! Also love Maura.

I think Maura is more likely to have "issues" [I don't think it is a big deal]... /MAHR uh/ versus /MORE uh/. I prefer the first prn.

I really like both Moira and Maura.  I'm not sure exactly what the pronunciation problems would be with Moira, but I'm sure it's not going to be a totally recognizable name for some groups of people.

I know two women with this name spelled Moira.  One says More-uh, one says Moy-rah.  Spell it the way you prefer and correct anyone who says it the way you don't prefer.

I love it!

BUT

One of my best friends is Moira.  I can't imagine having trouble saying it but some people really struggle with it!  Like they physically can't say it....she has to coach some people to say it correctly.

I really like it! And prefer that to Maura. I feel like it is more exotic? Sounds more feminine.

I would say Moira like moy..rhyme with boy..ruh

I would say Maura rhyming with Laura/Lora. More uh.

But I have never seen either name before and it seems like others here have and are familiar with how it is "suppose" to be pronounced.

I have never seen the name or the spelling before. When I saw it in the title I thought of at least three different ways to pronounce it. I have definitely seen Maura before and wouldn't have problems pronouncing that. How would you pronounce Moira?

I would pronounce Moira like more-uh, just like Maura (and would pronounce "Mara" like mar-ah) but apparently Baby Name Wizard thinks "Moira" should be moy-rah, so perhaps I am wrong...

Not going to lie I had no idea how to pronounce the name until someone spelled it out in the post. Once I knew the correct pronunciation I got it and it made sense, however I wasn't able to come to that on my own.

I'm only familiar with the name from American Horror Story. When I saw this was how the character's name was pronounced I was surprised.

Hey there! Got a Moira of my own.

There are two legitimate ways of pronouncing the name, Maw-Rah & Moy-Rah, we do that latter.

Some people do have a LOT of trouble getting it out, my mother in law for the first six months of Moira's life butchered it!

However, I've found that if a person has had some exposure to another language, they have little to no issues saying it the way we do.

On top of all this, when I do meet someone who has a friend or relative w/the name they are quick to smile and tell me about their namesake. For example, when Moira was about 6 months old we were on vacation down the shore. A little old Irish late admired her in the stroller and then asked her name. I introduced her as Moira. The lady smacked her hands on her own cheeks, and let out a wow! Apparently she had immigrated from Ireland years and years before and had never heard anyone in the States with the name. She proceeded to tell me a story about her friend named Moira, which she claimed meant Little Mary. She left with the biggest smile on her face.

I love it, and have even asked our Moira if she likes her name. Her response, "Yup, it's really cool mom." :)

Moira is a great name, spelled either way.  I don't think most people will have a problem pronouncing the way you want to use.
