First Sonogram Tomorrow-Question

So I am having my first sonogram tomorrow at only 5 weeks. Apparently some people can hear the heart beat at this time, I hope that if it is too early I won't psych myself out with worry.

I'm finding myself feeling very nervous! Any advice for the first visit like this? What questions did you ask or forget to ask and wish you had?

They are going to do an u/s at 5w? That seems so early to me. You definitely won't "hear" a heartbeat at that point, and might not even see one. Don't worry if  you don't. My OB won't do u/s until 8w.

Good luck tomorrow and have fun! Questions I would ask are what foods do they want you to stay away from, exercise limitations, their prenatal appointment schedule, what the NT scan entails, etc.

I think it's important to have realistic expectations -- if your dates are correct, and you aren't quite 5 weeks yet, you will not hear or see a HB tomorrow.  The HB starts around 6 weeks, and it's pretty rare to see a HB before 6 weeks (even a day or two before).

I think if you keep this in mind, knowing that you'll probably just see a sac at this point, then that will hopefully help with your anxiety.

I don't recall any questions that I felt as though I needed to have answered at 5 weeks.  Are there any medications that you'd like to ask about?  You can also ask when your next appointment will be and what they will be doing (u/s or just an exam).

GL!

We saw a heartbeat at 5w6d with DD.  We were only in there for an u/s because of a huge bleed where we thought we'd lost the pregnancy.

I have my first u/s tomorrow too :-)  I am super excited since I'm on progesterone I wouldn't even know it if I had lost the baby so this will really be a great confirmation for me.  Also, I'll find out if it's one or two since they put in two blasts (IVF).  Woo hoo!

I hope you have a wonderful appointment. Do keep in mind though that if you are early in the 5th week you really will not yet see a heartbeat.  Check out the Carnegie Stages of Embryonic Development.

Just don't expect to see or hear anything, because at 5 weeks there's really nothing to see. I'm actually really surprised they would even do an ultrasound that early unless they think there's a chance that you're a lot further along than that? I haven't really heard of doing it before 8 weeks. But don't freak out if there's not much to see or hear.

I had an u/s at 5 or 6 weeks, I can't remember which, to confirm my BFP from fertility treatments.  We couldn't hear a heartbeat but the doc and MH said they could see the flutter of the heartbeat.

Wow, 5 weeks? Most women go in anywhere from 8-11 weeks, unless there is a history of fertility problems of some sort. Definitely don't worry if you don't hear/see anything yet, it's still very early.

I just got a sonogram at 8wks3days and we didn't hear the heartbeat (but we did see it) and even then it was hard to get a good shot of baby. At 5 weeks I wouldn't expect a whole lot. Maybe you can reschedule for later unless you have a medical reason for going in?

You won't hear a heartbeat at that time. Two reasons, 1. it might not be beating yet.

2. As I was told at my u/s today, it is too early to use a sono to listen to the heartbeat, it can hurt a baby at that gestation (and mine at 8W5D). We could however, see the heart beat on the screen, and they can measure the bpm without sound.

Thank you Ladies,

Yea it seemed early to me too, I have moved since my last Gyno appointment (pre-pregnancy) so I am seeing a new doctor. He has come very highly recommended and is known for having state-of-the-art equipment so I am just going to go with the flow with this appointment and feel him out. I have managed my expectations, thank you girls!

i've seen mixed outcomes at 5-6 weeks. sometimes you can see the little bean and heartbeat, sometimes they don't see anything. I would wait until your at least 7-8 weeks until you can really see anything. my 8 week jellybean was 1.6 cm.. still so super small.
