Slight Freak Out

Hi all. I'm about 5w4d and am PgAL...which is very very difficult. I had my first real freak out last night. I went to the bathroom and saw the SMALLEST and slighest discoloring when I wiped. It was light pinkish/brown, almost khaki, in color and was pretty minimal. Of course, I ran to the computer to read what it meant. From everything I'm seeing, there is no reason to call the doctor unless it gets heavy, red, and/or painful. I have no cramping and no pain but PgAL brain makes me think EVERYTHING will lead to a m/c.

I have my viability/dating scan on Monday and I'm pretty nervous. Anyone else experience any type of spotting? Is this normal? Am I just worried because I'm PgAL or do I have reason to worry?

Brown blood=old blood. I understand how hard it is not to worry (I had a m/c Aug 2010) but try to take it easy and drink plenty of water. As long as you don't have heavy, bright red bleeding, with lots of cramping then you should be ok. If it puts your mind at ease though, call your OB office and see if you can talk to the triage nurse, that's what they are there for :)

Hello Manda, I am also 5w4d pregnant and I also freaked out the whole weekend about this thing. First because I've have it for the last 2 weeks and second because I didn't even know I was pregnant and then I just thought I was losing it. This is my first pregnancy.

I went to two doctors, both told me that spotting could be a sign of miscarriage BUT there is no way to know for sure. So basically you need to calm down and wait. I had my first ultrasound yesterday because of the same reason (I was freaking out!) and they saw that I was not 8 weeks (as we counted from last menstruation) but only 5 weeks in size. So, either it hasn't been growing for the last 3 weeks or I ovulated late last cycle. I have another ultrasound next week to figure out, it should be doubled in size.

The bottom line is: spotting is not normal but in half of the cases, everything goes well at the end. Also, only a LOT of bright red blood plus cramps are a sign of real miscarriage. You just need to be sure it's in the right place with an ultrasound, as also ectopic pregnancy can cause spotting and that is really dangerous for both of you.

So, as my boyfriend says, be a temple of peacefulness for the baby, as probably he/she can feel everything you do. Mostly because you can't do anything but wait.

Spotting is VERY common in early pregnancy. If it it bright red, and heavy, you may have reason to worry. First tri is hard enough without ever experiencing a loss, I cant imagine how it must be for you.

This... with the word THINK being the key word.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss..  I just had my first BFP this time around on Monday and I'm already freaking out too!!  It's so normal to be worried, and you've probably had your guard up this time since day one.  It's so hard to feel genuinely happy about the Pg when last time all it led to was disappointment..  luckily, you have an appt coming up soon!  From what I've heard/read/researched between April and now, spotting isn't NORMAL, but it's COMMON, and many women that have spotting go on to have completely wonderful pregnancies and healthy babies.  My friend is 5 months along and she had spotting early in her pregnancy too, but so far so good!

I think we may be biased towards negativity because of past experience, but the best we can do is sit back, relax, and attempt to be positive..  but if you're losing sleep over it, call your nurse.. maybe they can give you a little peace!

Thanks, everyone! Trying to be positive and just keep my head up. As the PgAL mantra goes: Today I am pregnant and I love my baby.
