Sushi?

Hi!  So I just found out I'm pregnant and am going out to lunch with coworkers.  Am I ok to eat cooked sushi like a california roll, chicken tempura, or an avocado roll?

I think I would be but some sites freak you out about cross contamination?

TIA

Cooked sushi is totally fine.

Uncooked sushi is even up for debate. If it's a reputable place and not a particularly high mercury fish, a lot of docs say go for it. It's your choice.

i think its perfectly fine. I even had a philly roll last week (smoked salmon) and im OK. As long as the place you get it, you trust, you'll be fine. some other cooked rolls are shrimp tempura and boston roll.

I also think japanese women eat it all the time over there while they're pregnant, and they're babies are OK.. so why cant i have a philly roll once every few months?

I had spicy tuna and an eel roll for dinner last night.  I also eat  cold deli meat.  You will be fine.

This. There was a recent posting by an FDA scientist who said that fish that's been flash-frozen (which is the case with most reputable sushi restaurants) is safe to eat. It's also a matter of food handling, so stick to places you trust (not sure if other cities publish health dept info, but NYC gives restaurants a letter grade of A-F based on their inspection reports).

That said, my family had sushi the other night and it turned out to be my first food aversion, so there's that angle, too ;-)

This. My SIL is from Kobe, Japan and told me that in Japan sushi (uncooked sashimi included) is considered a staple of the pregnant woman's diet. Just don't consider gas station sushi in the same league.

I've had cooked and uncooked sushi once a month with both pregnancies everything is fine.

The majority of fish is flash frozen on the boat, they don't bring the boats in daily so they need to keep it good.  From what I've read it's law in many states.

I love sushi and it's been very difficult to avoid it. I was ordering cooked sushi since I found out I was pregnant by my Doctor said to stay away from even the cooked sushi because it's rolled in the same sushi rollers, mats, surfaces, etc. as raw fish. Obviously there are much worse things you can be doing than eating cooked sushi (smoking, drinking, drugs, etc) but just wanted to share the advice I received. Makes sense...even if I hate it!
