X-ray during pregnancy

On Monday I got into a car accident and while in the ER they had to take an X-ray of my lower back without a shield. They took it from the side and it was only one, but I'm still a little concerned for LO. He's moving around still, but what are the odds of birth defects and such? We're getting an US tomorrow, would that be able to show anything?

If they knew you were pregnant, I doubt they'd put you at risk. That's a law suit waiting to happen. I'm sure it's fine

True. Granted, they made me sign a waiver "as a precaution" they said. I called my OB and both she and the ER doc said I should be fine though.... Ugh.. I hate being a worrier.

Or they realized that a broken back would be far more dangerous than radiation exposure from an xray.

My first 16 wks, I was exposed to low levels gamma radiation at my work.  I spoke with the radiation experts at my work, and they said that the only known birth defects caused by radiation were from radiation disasters on the scale of Chernobyl.  I haven't had this lo yet, but the u/s have shown no issues so far.  So I think you shouldn't worry.

I had a chest X-ray over the weekend (with shield) and a chest CT.  Both DH and I were concerned, but after DHs googling he felt much better, that the risk as quite small, especially as baby matures.

Good luck.

One simple x-ray has about the same amount of radiation as being outside in the sun all day or flying on an airplane.  I am sure you are fine and it is better to check for your health and safety than to avoid it and you have something broken or  needing attention.  X-rays should be limited but they are not harmful at all unless in huge amounts like OP said.  Try not to worry and glad you are ok!

It is very minimal. I work in a hospital. They wouldn't have done it if they didn't find it necessary, but it really isn't a big deal.
