Ladies with Endo!

I have been talking to an endometriosis specialist in Atlanta and they want to do surgery. I just had a lap procedure done in December 2011. I've had 3 laps all done by my OB-GYN. I've had one done approximately every 3 years. My endo is always found in the same places: my intestines, my bladder and the back side of my uterus.

I had my first consultation with the endo doctor about a week ago. He reviewed my records. He said that the fact that my endometriosis keeps coming back in the same locations means that the OB-GYN is not getting all of it out. Have any you ever been told this? He said as endo specialist they have more knowledge and equipment to really go in and extract all my endo. He said they even look inside my uterus and I know my OB-GYN does not do this.

I really want them to do the surgery. At this point I am up for anything that will increase my chances. Unfortuntely there is a catch these doctors/surgeons are out of network and my insurance does not pay anything for out of network. The surgery will cost anywhere between $5,000-$7,500. I will take any comments, concerns, advice, or suggestions from you ladies. Thanks!!!!

My first lap was done by a local RE who claimed he specialized in removing endo. Three months after the first surgery, I went back into his office to get the ball rolling to begin IVF and discovered that the 2.5 cm endometromia were replaced with two 1cm cysts.  I recall my husband saying.. "so you missed it?"  the RE actually got mad and was admament that he got all the endo.  He said that it just sometimes comes back on it's own. We did a second surgery with the same RE.  Based on ultrasounds my ovaries were clear for almost a year and a half.

Then the fall of last year another endometromia popped up and this time I did what you did, started looking at endo specialists.  I was also looking into Naprotechnology because they claim to do surgery in the same manner.  Apparently most RE's and obgyn only caulterize(burn) the surface of the endo, whereas a speciallist goes under and around the endo into what might appear as healthy tissue to remove the roots of the diesese.  After meeting with a Napro Dr. I also had phone consults with Cent.er for Endo Care and the Center for Wom.en's Care.  All three of the phycisian spoke of the excision and techniques which led me to believe I would be in good hands whichever direction I choose.  The offices in Atlanta didn't take my insurance but the Napro doctor did (plus he was an hr. from my home) so I opted to go with him.

He did use the Da'Vinci system which I know the Atlanta Dr's don't use but he used the same cutting tools & adhesions barriers that the Atlanta specialists use.  I really think it's just that a preference and whether the pricey equipment is available.  My surgery lasted eight hours, compared to the 4 hours with my first RE.  Even though the surgery was twice as long my recovery was so much better.  It's been 9 months since my last lap and I still have no signs of the endometriosis returning.  Barely have any menstrual cramping at all.

I strongly recommend seeing a specialist.  You might also want to check out the Napro doctors. there are a few across the country.  I think the main facility is in Omaha but they train physicians who go off to their own practices and use the techniques.  They are Catholic affliated but even though I had three IVF before seeing him I never felt judged.
