Article on AMH/DOR and your mom's menopause

Forgive me if someone else already posted this, but I saw it on Google News today. The study connects a woman's fertility to the age her mom went through menopause.

http://www.medpagetoday.com/OBGYN/Menopause/35820

From the article, I especially thought it was interesting that "Being exposed to prenatal smoke also may contribute to earlier loss of fertility, they observed." Interesting!

The article is interesting.  In my case, my mother didn't go through menopause early, but I seem on track to do so.

One thing I have always wondered about - in my mother's generation it was very common to have a pelvic ultrasound close to the time of delivery if there was any concern at all as to whether a c-section would be necessary.  This was known as pelvimetry x-rays and was common and often done.  My mother had one a couple weeks before I was born and the thought was that there was no harm to the fetus from the radiation when they were almost full term.

I can't help but wonder if that did have an impact and if some of us who are now experiencing DOR at a younger age than expected could have been impacted by fairly routine x-rays that were thought at the time to be safe.

It is not true in my case either.

I also question routine x-rays, especially at the dentist. I hate xrays! I am a RN and whenever xray comes around to snap a shot of my patients I walk far away! I dread traveling to radiology with my patients, it gives me anxiety.

Thank you for posting this. I lost my mom in 2010. I have so many questions I whish I could ask her.  Going through all this infertility stuff has been especially hard without having her to talk to.  I don't think she went through menopause early. But I do think there is a possibility she may have smoked while pregnant with me. I don't have the heart to ask my dad because I know he'd feel guilty. It was just different back then. But I have to wonder if that could be a cause for my DOR.  I try not to think too much about it - because there is nothing I can do to change it. I was a C-section baby too - so probably had the kind of xrays you are talking about.

Me:38 - TTC for 3+years - Multiple failed IUIs (w/clomid, femara, injectibles - all BFNs) IVF #1 - Jan 2012, CP -IVF#2 March 2012, CP - Went back to IUIs all summer. Multi-Cycle Egg banking for FET. Egg retrieval #1 October, 2 frosties. Retrieval#2 January 2013. 6 eggs banked - waiting to be fertilized in March, FET March! FET - cancelled because zero eggs survived thaw process. April IUI, BFP - Beta #1 - 43, Beta #2 - 78, Beta #3 dropped, another CP. May IUI with Femara.

I lost my mom 8 years ago this February- so I know exactly what you mean about wishing you could talk to your mom about all of this. My mom was in the medical field, so I always wonder what she would say about our treatment decisions, etc.  If you ever want to commiserate- PM me!

Thank you for posting this!  Both the early menopause & prenatal smoke exposure are true for me.

And I know what you mean about running from the portable xrays!  Im a RN too & whenever they come to shoot our pts, I run as far away as I can.  Granted then I get the "is there something you want to tell us" question but I usually just say no, just being careful.
