Diaper Rash

My daughter has a never ending diaper rash! It started a couple of weeks ago when I watched my niece. She had a doctor worthy diaper rash that was not being properly cared for and her diapers were a size too small. That day after a few changes my daughter started to get a rash of her own. It could have been a coincidence but I think it was picked up. After hard work, lots of changes, being peed on several times, and lots of creams we were rid of it last weekend. So imagine my surprise when it returned the day before yesterday. The first rash was a large red patch that was slightly raised but not raw. This rash is red splotches and bumps. Some spots are alittle scaley and dry. We are going to the doctor in the morning. I have been using equate barrier cream(because it has the highest zinc oxide cream at  40%), dr. smiths cream, lotrimin antifungal(at the nurses suggestion), airing as much as possible(atleast and hour a day). I am not sure what else I could do! I have considered hydrocortisone. Any thoughts are appreciated.

it sounds like yeast maybe. I would avoid the zinc - great at PREVENTION but not good at healing and actually can make yeast and other rashes worse once you've got them (but great to put on healthy skin before bed for a water barrier to prevent rash).

See what the doc says but I am guessing yeast and you'll want to use antifungal and hydrocortisone for a bit to clear it up.

Definitely try an oatmeal bath a few times a day.  And generally speaking, diaper rash isn't contagious.

Not sure where you got this info. Zinc is incredibly healing. No, it doesn't kill yeast (or bacteria), but it does soothe the skin and aid in healing the damage that yeast infections can leave behind.

From our pedi - she said that because it is a barrier it can prevent the skin from breathing and actually get worse. Zinc is very healing, but if it is yeast it is not helpful and can make a rash worse by trapping moisture against the skin.

Just my two cents worth here, but I also took my daughter to the doctor for diaper rash.  She gets a pretty raw butt and it seems to coincide with when teeth are coming in.

We were give an anti fungal (Nystatin ?) and a steroid to mix together and use twice a day.  The other times my doctor told us to use something with Zinc Oxide in it and use enough so we cannot even see her skin through it.

Also, we started giving her daily baths (was every 2 or 3 days because of dry skin) and that seems to help.
