Opinions please!

Hello! It's early, but my husband and I are starting to compile a list of names we like and I wanted to bounce them off someone besides my mom (who likes really off the wall names - totally NMS).  I don't want anything too boring and plain, as we have a very common last name - King, but also don't want anything weird or made up, and definitely nothing too trendy. We're having fraternal twins but don't know the sexes yet.

I don't want my kid to be one of several with the same name in their class at school, and I don't want to pick something super trendy that no one will be choosing in 5 years. At the same time, "James King" is just too boring for words. Such a hard balance to get right!!

What do you ladies think of these?

Boys:  Miles Rowan or Jordan Alexander

Girls: Avery Elizabeth is all we've really got.  We also like Madeleine.

I like a few more interesting names like Ramona, Violet, and Makenzie (which is my sister's middle name), but my husband is British and keeps vetoing my more "interesting" suggestions. I might be able to get him to come around on Violet but am afraid to even suggest Ramona.

Jackson, Emma, Sophia, and Olivia are out. Way too popular. Thanks!!

I prefer Miles Rowan of your two boy suggestions. I think it's great!

Avery is so cute! Good choices!

My issue with both Jordan and Avery is they're unisex, and I actually associate Jordan more strongly with girls (though I think it ought to be a boy name) and Avery with boys (because of Charlotte's Web and the one Avery I know).

I like Miles, and Madeleine as well, though it is quite popular now (I would guess if you combine all the spellings, it's nearly as popular as other girl names you're rejecting on that basis), and I *really* like Violet.   Ramona is nice; maybe Monica?  Not a fan of Makenzie and it screams trendy, but it would be nice as a MN to honor your sister.

Miles is ok, I'm not a fan of Rowan.

I have a baby cousin named Jordan Alexandra.  Jordan for girls is great, but it's very 80's for boys - I think of Jordan Knight from NKOTB.

I don't really like Avery at all.

Ramona and Violet are really cute!

If popularity is a problem, Madeleine might not be a name to consider, it's up there (but maybe not with the same spelling)

Aughh!! I hadn't thought of this - and I'm a child of the 80s. Shoot.

I like Miles;  Violet is nice as is Madeline (that spelling).

Ramona--well, it seems you're a RHONY fan with Ramona and Avery;  Ramona is awful IMHO even if it didnt remind me of a bug-eyed narcissistic rude psychopath.  Avery is ehh.  Mackenzie is ok but reminds me of a drug addict (Mackenzie Phillips)

I really like Miles Rowan and I like Alexander.  Do not like Jordan for a boy or girl (it is definitely a unisex name these days).  Other boy suggestions:  Owen, Carson, Bryce, Reid, Evan, Lucas, Liam, Caleb, Rhys, Gavin (Owen and Liam may be too popular for your taste).

I like Avery Elizabeth.  I also like Violet.  Other girl suggestions:  Camilla, Caroline, Claire, Charlotte, Carys, Lily, Juliet, Lila, Kate, Stella, Mallory.  Great middle names:  Noelle, Katherine, Grace, Rose.

If you are concerned about names being way too popular, I think Avery and Madeleine are both fairly popular.  Avery is NMS, too.  Rowan is also unisex/I think of as a girl's name, as is Jordan.

What sort of names does your husband like?

I am in a similar boat in that I like more unusual names but my hubby won't sign on to things too strange for him, but I don't want something where the kid is the 3rd in their class with that name.

Girl names he might like?  Sabrina, Eloise, Chelsea, any of these maybe work for you?

Boy names, I like:  Aaron, Neal, Sebastian, and off your list, Alexander. (I just happen to know an Alexander who is a wanker and I'd never pick it because of that, but you don't know him, so it's all good.)

Thank you for all your opinions! Rowan is traditionally a boy's name (at least in England) so I think Miles Rowan is still on the list. You've all confirmed my fears about Avery and Jordan though. Madeline's stil a maybe but I've always thought it's probably too popular. And my husband will never ever go for Ramona - I only like it because growing up, I loved the Ramona Quimby books.

And to the PP who asked what my husband likes... he hasn't really come up with anything on his own, he just keeps vetoing. : )

I'll mull over your suggestions... thanks again.

I like Miles Rowan a lot...I think that's a keeper.  I actually like Jordan for a boy too, but it does seem like it's been taken over by girls.  I've never been a fan of Avery, but I do like Elizabeth.

Madeleine is fine, but I'm kind of over it.  Ramona and Violet are nice.  I hate Mackenzie.

There are a lot of British names that are more "interesting," I think.  Have you tried this girl list and this boy list on Nameberry?
