We registered for everything we thought we'd need, and got pretty much everything from one shower. Most of the big items were bought by family (my sis called dibs on the crib and picked one out herself from a high-end store we'd never visit, so we didn't even register for that,) and that covered everything from a stroller to the pack n play to a high chair.
That being said, we didn't register for other nursery furniture because we figured that would be too expensive for anyone to get, and we weren't necessarily buying it from a baby store. So, we bought a recliner and the changing table online, cheaper than what we'd find it at a baby store.
Other than that, we got a ton of stuff we didn't register for, too, including a few books, tons of clothes (we didn't register for any), and a few toys.
Overall, once the shower (30 people invited, not huge at all) was over, we were set for DD's arrival.
