Infant Watching TV

Someone said that it is bad for babies to watch tv. My son doesnt sit and watch it long, but he is 2 months old and will look at its lights for a little bit. Is this ok?

It is hard to avoid. I'd just make sure it is very limited cause TV messes with the brain.

Some people are very adamant about no tv around their infants. I never worried about it, unless Ds would fight sleep to try to watch it. Then it was shut off.

I catch my LO watching it too. He's 5 weeks old.  Kind of freaks me out so I turn it off or turn him away.  Not sure what it's doing to his little brain, but I'd rather not take any chances.  Not for a little while at least.

We watch baby Einstein every morning together. He loves it, smiles at the puppets, laughs at it and plays along with me! I really believe that a little bit here and there is completely fine....but that is just me.

LOs are not "supposed" to watch TV. I have tried so hard for almost 4 months to keep Piper from watching, but she will contort herself into the most uncomfortable positions to look at the screen. At this point I'm almost giving up, but trying to limit how much she actually sees and what she's watching.

You could turn off the TV.

We go pretty strict on the no TV before 2. But some are more "in moderation." Regardless, it isn't difficult to keep an infant from watching TV.

I'm willing to bet most of the people posting here were exposed to tv more than the "recommended amount" as infants... and I'm guessing we're all doing ok. It's a wonder any of us survived seeing as how our mothers and grandmothers didn't do all of the things we are so adamant about not doing. Yeesh. Like most anything, tv is ok in small amount. It's saved me a few minutes to get ready for work or put a load of laundry in now and then.

Yep, and we all probably had solids at 6 weeks, didn't ride in car seats, etc. etc. Saying we survived isn't an argument. When you know better, you do better.

At this age, they are just attracted to the lights and movement.  My LO likes to stare at the ceiling fan, too.  I've read where they should not watch t.v. until they are two, but I don't think it is going to fry their brain if you have it on the background.  Personally, I don't let little one sit in his swing or in his boppy and stare at it for hours, but if he looks at while we are feeding or changing, I really think that is probably okay.  I think the main thing you don't want to do is to let it "entertain" your baby instead of you interacting with him or her.

No, it isn't "ok." Sure people do it, but the majority of people also used to smoke around their kids.

The AAP recommends NO screen time at all for LO's under two for very good, we'll-researched reasons. Do you want to risk attention span disorders, nightmares, language delays, psychological problems, obesity or decreased ability to engage in self-directed play just because you couldn't be bothered to turn off the TV?  Screen time is a slippery slope, and once you allow LO's to be entertained by digital media it is most likely a habits that your family will continue, escalating those aforementioned risks.

Go read for yourself:

I personally don`t let my baby watch any TV but from what I read it`s not the TV itself that is harmful, but the fact that it takes away from all the other interactions and activities that are so important for normal development.  SO if your baby catches a glimpse of TV and is attracted to the lights for like a minute it`s not going to hurt them, but if you let them stare at it for long periods of time instead of doing tummy time, reading stories, going for walks, talking to your baby, then yes it will set them up for problems.
