XP: Anyone read to their bump?

Hey ladies! I have a semi silly question. I have read different things that say the baby's ears are developed and am pretty sure she can hear me. I want to start reading to her at night before going to bed but am not sure when to start. I have an anterior placenta and am not feeling too much movement just yet so I am not aware of when she is awake vs sleeping. Anyone read to their bump? Different calculators tell me different things. The ivf.ca one tells me maternal sounds are recognized on 11/17. I was thinking maybe by Dec I will start reading a book to her every night. Anyone else plan on doing this? We are also dying to play music and see what she likes as DH and I have very different music tastes but since I cant feel her kicking yet it would be hard to know what she likes/doesn't like. TIA :)

I sometimes play music and hold the speaker up to my belly.  My baby's favorite will be zeppelin whether he likes it or not :)

My LO indirectly hears A LOT of children's stories.  I have two 19 month olds who love books.  When I was pregnant with them, I didn't read books aloud or sing, etc., but I do feel as if this LO is benefiting from all the reading and singing.  If nothing else, I feel like my emotional connection with him/her is growing.  On the other hand, I felt more awkward than connected when I even tried to talk to the babies during my first pregnancy, so I am not sure any of us would have benefited.

I say that, at the very least, using books and music to build an emotional connection may be worthwhile to you, baby, and DH.

Thanks ladies! I am definitely looking forward to the bonding experience. When did you start? A certain time or week or just whenever?

I am a bibliophile and a musician so I am contantly reading, playing, or singing something.  So LO has been exposed since before conception.  It also helps that DH likes it when I read out loud to him.  My OB said that as of about 12 weeks baby can feel the vibrations of your voice and external stimuli.  Go ahead, indulge your LO and enjoy.  If my FB was any indication, baby will let you know what they do and don't like as your pregnancy progresses.

I read to my wife's belly.

My wife speaks so much during the day that she really doesn't need to (teacher), but she was wanting the baby to hear my voice a lot too. It really isn't content that matters at this point- so I have been reading aloud Lord of the Rings while my wife falls asleep in the bed ha.

That is awesome! And you are so right. This kid hears me all the time between me just talking to her and me being a teacher. I definitely need to get DH involved more! And i love that you are reading Lord of the Rings lol that is awesome!

There have been a ton of studies done in the past few years that show reading to baby in the womb actually starts teaching them language patters.  Some of these studies have shown that kids who were read to in the womb speak faster with a larger vocabulary.

As their brain is constantly developing in womb, I figure it doesn't hurt to have them read to. My SO is the one that reads to them as they hear me all day.  Plus I really want the boys to recognize SO's voice as they will mine.

Not to mention just like playing certain music to them in womb can actually calm them once they are born, a familiar story can do the same thing.

Please note by studies these are independent studies not gov funded.  I pasted a couple of links below and I acknowledge these are not endorsed by any medical foundational or basis.  Just some interesting things to think about.

I read to mine LO and there is always music playing in the car so she has gotten a lot of exposure through the whole pregnancy.

I started changing my reading and music-playing habits for baby's benefit around 19 weeks.   The baby has to listen to me ramble on about microbiology to my students all day, but I listen to softer classical music on my car rides home and do some of my reading out loud at night.  If I listen to some really crazy music (Dragonforce) then I listen to it at a lower volume Huh?

DD loves books so I read to her all the time and hope that her little brother is listening in my belly too.  I also love music and sing constantly.  DD loves music herself, so I'm thinking there is some truth to reading, singing to LOs.
