Basal Thermometer?

Hi Everyone.  I'm somewhat new at TTC (going on month three) and I'm already getting a little frustrated.  I have been charting and have been using OPKs.  I'm wondering if my old regular thermometer is not very accurate and considering buying a basal body thermometer.  Does anyone have a recommendation on a brand?  Do I even need one if I'm using OPKs?  Thanks.

Yes, I would definitely get an actual BBT thermometer. I originally purchased an Up & Up one from Target, but it died on me within two weeks. Now I have a Mabis from Walmart. I would still temp even with OPKs because you can get a positive OPK without having actually O'd. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please, but I believe OPKs only show that you are gearing up to O and the temps actually confirm it.

ETA: Also, don't get discouraged after three months. I know that's easier said than done. It can take up to a year for a healthy couple to conceive. Just keep temping and using OPKs to get the best timing possible. Hope you get your BFP soon!

I'm using the Mabis from WalMart. I've been very happy so far, this is my first month charting and I got a nice temp shift at O.

Temping is a good idea to confirm ovulation, OPKs only show you that your body is gearing up to O.

Welcome--read the newbie link it has lots of good info.

I use the CVS BBT.

OPK's tell you about your LH surge, and gearing up to O. They don't tell you if you actually ovulated. That is confirmed through charting your temperature and seeing the shift. Good luck!

Thanks everyone.  I normally wouldn't be so discouraged, but I just had 3 friends tell me they conceived on their first try.  I usually don't compare myself to other people, because I know everyone is different, it just made me kind of sad that it hasn't happened for us.

Hang in there, everyone is different.

And sometimes I feel like people just make that sh*t up!

Agreed!

Try not to get discouraged, although that's much easier said than done. Good luck!

I don't recommend the Walgreens BBT, it favors temps.  I used to use it but now I use the Mabis from Walmart, it's much better.  OPK's only tell you if you are gearing up to O not that you have actually O'd.  It is possible for your body to gear up to O and then not O.

I'm waiting for my Mabis to come from Amazon - I live in a small town with not a BBT thermometer in sight, and heck, I have trouble just buying a pregnancy test as the cashier is likely to be an ex-student of mine! lol  Anyways, I'm using a regular baby thermometer for now and I just don't feel like it's accurate enough, I really want to catch that O temp rise and two decimal places instead of one should help. :)

Exactly this.  Good luck, OP!
