Q: Nothing showing on first U/S

I found out I was pregnant on Monday and had a confirmation appt with my doctor on Tuesday. He advised that I was about 6 weeks based on my LMP (which I'm not 100% sure on the exact date - I'm pretty sure it was sometime within the last week of Sept so I could possibly even be 5 weeks depending on what day). He scheduled me an u/s for the next day. While there, the tech kept making weird faces the whole time and asking me over and over again when my LMP was. After what felt like an eternity, the tech advised that she is showing a gestational sac, but nothing else so she figures I am only 4 weeks. She has scheduled me to go back on the 21st to confirm a date.

 I've been driving myself crazy since it doesn't make sense to me that I would be 4 weeks if my LMP was the end of Sept...

Anyone had something similar like this happen?

Basing gestation off of LMP is the standard way of doing things, but it isn't the same for everyone. You could've ovulated late or your cycle was a little off. Unless you were charting and know exactly when you ovulated, you definitely could just be too early to see anything.

How long are your menstrual cycles usually? It is highly possible that you ovulated late. It sounds like your doctor is taking the proper steps to wait a couple of weeks before doing the dating u/s.

You most likely ovulated late. Or the baby stopped growing. But I would hope it was the first one. ;) Don't worry about it too much. The 21st isn't so far away and then you will have your answers. Have faith in your baby.

When we went for our first ultrasound we were expecting to see the fetal pole and heartbeat, but only saw a gestational sac and BARELY a yolk sac. It was stressful, but it just turned out that our dates were off by about a week and when we went back two weeks later there was a heartbeat and it was amazing. :)

Thanks ladies, that definitely makes me feel better. This is my second pregnancy, first one ended in miscarriage so I guess this time around I am being extra paranoid.

I wasn't charting so to be honest, I have no idea when I ovulated last. I'm hoping that I just ovulated late... guess I'll find out in 2 weeks

If you don't know when you ovulated try not to worry.  Most likely you just ovulated later in your cycle.

My LMP was 8 wks ago and I'm only about 4 weeks pregnant based on hcg levels I wouldn't worry yet momma.

Don't worry..the same thing happened to me.  I just ovulated late.  They saw nothing at what was supposed to be 6 weeks.  I came back 2 weeks later and saw a healthy heartbeat.  I was measuring a week late from what they thought from my LMP. 

I know the wait is excruciating but hopefully your next visit will make it all worthwhile!
