Photographer- Private or Chain Store?

Hi, I want to get DS photographed for Christmas cards and first birthday. Any advice on whether to use a private photographer or chain store like JCPenny, Sears etc.? When he was first born we used the hospital photographer and didn't like the photos. Then we used a private photographer who was okay, nothing spectacular. I don't know if we should try another private or use a chain store. I don't have any experience with chain stores photo studios. Any advice would be appreciated!

I guess it depends on what kind of shots you are after and what you are willing to pay.  Private photographers in my city charge at least $100 for portraits, Walmart charges $30.

Do you want he traditional / standard portraits in front of a backdrop? Or were you thinking of less traditional shots? How much are you willing to pay? Private photos cost more, but will generally give you the rights to print the photos on your own, whereas portrait studios make you pay an arm and a leg for printing rights, or you just buy the prints through them at a hefty markup.

As PPs said, it depends on the type of photograph you want.  Portrait Studio photos at a chain store are less costly, but I prefer a private photographers' photos (studio portraits are really becoming out of vogue :)  ).  Lucky for me my sister is a professional photographer!  Shop around till you find the prices AND style you want, or find a friend or relative who has a good eye to take some for you.

I would want a background that doesnt distract from DS and his cute outfit. I'm not sure if a portrait studio is better for that or if I'm just not thinking creatively of what the backdrop should be if I use a private photographer? It's already too cold here to do them outside.

We have used both. I like Portrait Innovations and Picture People as they have plain backgrounds and capture DD on her own very well. I usually spend about 50 to 60 dollars there and we used them for our 3, 6, 9 month photos. For her newborn pics and Christmas/ birthday we are going with a photographer because we want more artistic shots. But the cost is usually about 150 or higher. Frankly, I have been pretty happy with my less expensive photos but don't get as much variety of poses with them.

A lot of private photographers have FB pages and many of them might also offer Christmas mini photo shoots for the holidays.  The photographer we use does this and it's either $75 or $50 for 30 minutes and up to 10 images on a CD.

If you're on FB, ask your friends who they recommend, view their work, talk to them, etc.

I am a Photographer and I always ask my clients what is your budget? If it doesn't sound like much or they didn't give it much thought, I may suggest they go to a chain type store but I will most certainly make a pitch first to gain their business before I send them to someone else!
