km3:I have to admit, I just got excited to see someone mention Roland! That's my son's middle name. My dad's fn is Roland and FIL's mn is Roland, so it was an obvious choice for us.
My dad has never really liked his name and goes by RJ often. He said kids would tease him by singing Proud Mary to him "rollin' on the river" but I'm sure that's generational. I personally don't like the Rolly nn options, but I love Roland.
I really am surprised after coming across this name that it isn't gaining popularity. There are so many old-fashioned names coming back, I see people on here praising names like "Walter" and "Atticus" all the time. Plus it has that "last-name" kind of feel to it that is so trendy as well. I kind of feel like I discovered a hidden gem. I'm adding this to my list.
I also think kids will always find something to tease about! I got made fun of for my last name because it started with "Steg-" and they called me "Stegosaurus." So, you never know. =)
