Seasonal weekend job during 3rd tri?

I'm sneaking in from the 2nd tri board, and wanted some insight from you ladies.

I currently am making just enough to make ends meet, with no real financial cushion. I plan on talking with my employer this week about maternity leave, and I'm worried since it's a small company they won't be able to offer paid ML. So, I need as much money as I can make.

I'm considering trying to find a seasonal job for pretty much December and maaaybe part of January. I tried talking to my SO about it, and he just looked at me and said, "you are quite pregnant." True, but it's not like he's bringing in any income. He then cuts off the convo with, "I'm sure it'll be fine." I'm all for optimism, but I'm almost in my 3rd tri and I still need most of the basics, including some big items. Plus, I really don't want to go back to work 2 weeks after giving birth. I'd like more time than that with my new baby.

So, my question is, am I crazy for even considering working potentially 7 days a week while 6 to 7 months pregnant? I know it's not ideal, but it's doable, right?

Thanks for any words of wisdom! :]

How strenuous are your jobs? I know I could not do it, but my job is being a nurse. I personally would hate it, but then again you do what you have to do in situations. I went back to school/clinicals 3 days after giving birth to my daughter because the alternative was dropping out of nursing school.

Now did I read that correctly that your SO isn't bringing in any income? That would not be okay with me. I dealt with that before and let me tell you I stayed with a man like that for far too long. My husband now doesn't make a lot but he works his tail off to provide for us as best he can. I can't say that for someone who isn't even working(my ex husband).

Seasonal retail is very hard on the feet normally!  I'd find a cushy job (sitting) if your seriously considering it.

First off I am sorry that you are having to deal with financial problems, I know how difficult that can be.

Secondly, some doctors will not take you off for maternity leave until around 35 weeks pregnant, unless there is something medically wrong. So unless you have something wrong going on with this pregnancy, the doctor still should allow you, and even at that, many moms work up right to when their water breaks.

Thirdly, I work in retail and though it was hard to deal with and cope with coming home with swollen feet and a sore back, it wasn't the worse thing in the world, I just made sure to take it easy the rest of the day.

Fourthly, I think no matter what kind of job you have, disability still pays you for Maternity leave.  Look into it

:) Good luck!

I'd ask your doctor about what limitations they would want you to take.

I understand needing the extra money, so I have a hard time saying to not do it. :/

Um, your SO doesn't bring in any income? Uhhhhh. I don't care if that boy is in school; he needs to be bringing in some support.

I just started one! It's been rough to be on my feet pretty much exclusively, but luckily most retail positions have shorter shifts... anywhere from 4 to 8hrs is normal. It's no cake walk, but it's doable.

Thanks for the input, ladies! You "bumpies" are always so helpful. I <3 free advice! lol

I think I can work my day job (desk job, only mentally strenuous) until I pop. I've had a really healthy / easy pregnancy so far, thankfully.

I'll start trolling CL immediately! :)

I'd say give it a try, if it gets to be too much you can always quit... However start looking asap because when I moved at 7 months, I couldn't find a job (and I am pretty sure it was because the fact I was pregnant). So I hope you have better luck than I did.

All this. The school system I worked for covered my maternity leave through short term disability. GL!

I work 5 days a week, but find that my weekend are sometimes even more tiring than my job because I'm trying to clean the house and prep for baby. It feels like I'm working a 7 day week job anyway. Is your SO free during the day (not studying or something like that)? If he picks up the housework, cooking and jobs like painting the nursery, then I would think that you would manage the extra hours. But I would suggest stopping the weekend work at 36/37 weeks.

As someone who did it recently, it's not easy, but you can do it. I work a 40 hr/week office job and in the month of Oct, DH and I worked at a haunted farm for 8+ hrs/night for 3-4 nights a week. It was harder than it has been in the past when I wasn't pregnant, and I was quite exhausted by the end of the month, but it was doable. Try to find an employer who has a good reputation with being flexible with their employees if they work another job (so you don't have conflicting schedules) and take it as easy as possible between shifts. Also, like other PPs have stated, DH not making money wouldn't fly if I were you, but since I don't know your situation I won't judge. However, if he's able to work, he should be out looking for employment (maybe he can find a seasonal job to start off with) too.

Why can't the non-working partner get the seasonal job?? You shouldn't have to be working 2 jobs in 3rd tri while he does nothing!!!

I am 35 weeks now and it just all got a LOT harder for me, but this is also my 3rd baby. I would be absolutely miserable trying to work a second job now or any job on my feet. If you can find a desk job or something, it would be do-able, but I personally couldn't/wouldn't do waitressing or retail at this point.

Disability would only pay for maternity leave if she either has a private short-term disability policy or her company has a group short term disability policy.  Far from standard, especially for small companies.

It kinda depends on how strenuous your jobs are and how you're feeling.  In my 1 tri, I worked 11 hours a day, 5 days a week.  But since, hitting the later end of the 3rd tri, (36 weeks) I'm barely making it to the end of the school day.  It's not so much that I'm tired as that by the end of the day, I ache!  Even hitting the grocery store on the way home is something I plan for.

I think it depends on how you're feeling.  If you are feeling good and your main job isn't to physically taxing, you might be able to do it without a problem VERY part time.  I wouldn't over-extend yourself.  Especially at 6-7 months.  If you said 8-9, I'd say no for sure.

Good luck!
