1st Time Airplane Travel For Dummies...

Hi Moms,

Need help understanding the do's and don'ts of traveling with a 10 month old on a plane. What is essential and what is not so much. What about formula and water? I know stroller and diaper bag don't count towards bags but need help with what I should bring. Thank you soooo much.

Diaper bag doesn't count?  So I can bring DDs backpack in addition to my own carry on + personal item?  That would be a relief.

You can double check on your airline's website.  We're flying JetBlue for Thanksgiving and even lap infants are allowed one carry-on (so, the diaper bag).  Lap infants are not allowed any checked bags though (strollers and car seats do not count as checked bags though)

I wrote a lengthy response to a similar post the other day:

Check your airline policies, I'm pretty sure United said somewhere that a diaper bag did not count towards carry on allocation.

We have traveled w/our 2 kids on a plane twice at least.  Both times went fine.  A little stressful but nothing crazy.

1. Bring a baby carrier like an ergo.  That way, you can carry the baby through security without taking her off of you, you just have to let them swipe your hands or something.

2. Gate check the stroller so you can access it easily when getting off the plane.  You can just check the car seat normally (for free too).

3. I think the diaper bag is just like your personal bag.  I usually carry a backpack, I never used diaper bags I prefer back packs.

4. Take snacks like puffs and stuff.  And you can take formula/water as long as TSA can test the liquid to make sure you're not going to blow up the plane.

Everything else is pretty normal as far as travel goes, just keep the baby occupied and hope that they sleep on the plane!

If you don't want to wear baby through security, like me... I just had him in the stroller and then put the stroller to be scanned and walked through with DS.

We traveled with DS (at 9 months and 11 months) - the first trip was a NINE hour flight non-stop - ouch!

  • Definitely gate check your stroller - I also suggest gate checking your carseat. When you arrive at your gate, ask the desk if the flight is full. If it's not, they will let you have the open seat for your LO (However, you MUST have your carseat available so LO can be strapped in). This worked for us all both of flights - so we got the extra seat and didn't have to pay extra for it!!!!
  • TONS of snacks - seriously, TONS
  • New toys - we bought a bunch of new (not noisy) toys just for the flight
  • We walked up and down the aisles when able to do so
  • If you need warm water for bottles, the flight attendants could give us a small amount of hot water (for tea, etc) and we would use bottled water to cool it down a bunch.

Hope this helps and GL!
