When are you taking LO out and about?

Is anyone keeping their LO home for the first month, 2 months, 3 months...etc?  My LO is only 5 weeks old and with the Thanksgiving coming up, I have made the decision to lay low.  We have other kids in our family and they are always sick and I just can't take that chance of bringing the baby around them.  But it seems like some people think it's a little crazy and overprotective to do this.  Anyone else dealing with this?

I was/am a little over protective. Our pedi terrified us of what could happen if a newborn gets sick. We waited until 5 weeks to take him to church and start really getting him out. We also haven't let other people outside family hold him yet. I'm feeling better now, but once he gets shots next week I think ill relax even more. We are going to Thanksgiving, he'll be 8 weeks old then.

People can think your crazy all they want, you're just trying to keep your kid safe; do what makes you comfortable.

We started taking LO out and about at three days old (Target), was at the family cabin at two weeks and we just kept going. As long as we were aware of what he came into contact with meaning surfaces and such and also people (we made everyone wash their hands if they wanted to hold him) and those who were sick didn't get to touch or cough on him or anything. Most adults get this without having to be asked, but we did remind those with kids that the same rules applied to their four year old. No one was ever upset with us and if they were, well, it's our kid and our rules apply!

Do what you are comfortable with, but just be aware that no matter what that first outing or family event is nerve wracking whenever you decide to go. Your baby, your rules!

We took DS out immediately. I couldn't imagine not leaving the house regularly. As long as LO doesn't get passed around a lot or goes near sick people there is no reason you can't go out.

We took the baby out at 6 days old to target. It seems kind if silly to miss the holidays. If you don't want anyone holding the baby then don't.

We took our LO out at 1 week old, just to doctors offices, small stores, and for walks around the block. I didn't take him to the mall or grocery stores until 4 weeks. He just got his first cold at 9 weeks old and I have to say I was surprised at how quickly he got over it, breastfeeding really does help boost their immunity!

I was pretty conservative with DD, but I think I'll be a little less strict this time.  I get pretty bored sitting at home all day, so I'll venture out as needed in a week or so.

DS is 6 weeks tomorrow and I could not fathom the thought of staying in the house. We've been pumpkin picking, to the mall, out to lunch with friends, family get togethers etc.

I take my LO out all the time however I am still a bit cautious  as to what she'll be around. For example, I have a 2 year old niece who is not vacinated and I do not plan to have my DD around her until Christmas and she'll be 4.5 months old by then. I would wait longer if I could but something tells me I can't avoid Christmas with my ILs.

DD was at Ikea at 1 week old and at the mall at 2 weeks old.

Go out when you are comfortable.

We started taking LO out & about at 1 week.  He's been to the mall, grocery stores, the OB's office, Target, Kohls, WalMart, the pediatrician's office, 3 restaurants, the community center, for long walks... We ask people to wash their hands before touching him & stay away if they have any signs they could possibly be sick.  But do what makes you comfortable. That's what's important.

I started taking DS out at about 1 week. We went to church when he was 1week old. I just held him when he cried during the service and put him back in his carseat after so others wouldn't ask to hold him. I then started taking him places after that.
I can't imagine staying home for such a long time!! Plus I couldn't imagine missing holidays! Just don't let anyone hold him if that's what you want. You could always put him in a baby carrier to deter people from asking.

I just wanted to let you know that my lo had a fever yesterday, and had to take him to the hospital because of it. If your lo is 8 weeks or younger they have to do a urine, blood and spinal fluid test. I wouldn't worry about the first 2 but with a spinal i would be more concerned. Fyi! Our lo was fine its just a virus.

I've had 2 babies with fevers under 8 weeks old.
A. Most doctors won't tell you to take a baby to the hospital for a fever unless its over 104 degrees.
B. when our older daughter had a fever of 105.6 at 5 weeks old they didn't do a spinal fluid test.
Different doctors/hospitals do things differently.

My LO has been out quite a bit. He always makes grocery store trips with me and so far we've been to my MIL's house a few times, the mall to get my hair cut, corn maze for work outing, etc. He didn't get sick at all until he started daycare @ 8weeks.

It is about what you are comfortable with but also where you live; we are in downtown  chicago, so not only are there alot of people, but there is an exceptionally high rate of pertussis infections in the surrounding area.  So DD has only been to the doctor's and to one outing with my mother when she flew out here to see her. In our case the risk factors were too high.

On the night you were born, the moon smiled with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you and the night wind whispered,"life will never be the same" Image and video hosting by TinyPicalt="Lilypie 1st Birthday Pic" width="29" height="20" border="0" /> BabyFetus Ticker

I had her out the first week for errands after her first doc's appointment, and we've been going out a couple times a week since then (she's 7 weeks old now).  We went to a big family gathering when she was a month, and to visit friends out of town when she was five weeks. Church every week, too. I'll be honest--I think you're overprotective and borrowing trouble if you're assuming people are going to be sick, but that's just where I'm coming from. If it's what you feel is best, that's fair--because you're the mom you make the call.  But I would not expect people to get behind your decision because, frankly, I'm a FTM and I think you're overreacting.

Now, if you heard that Aunt Jennie was sick and all her kids had the flu, I could see bowing out of Thanksgiving.  At the same time, why the heck are people going to Thanksgiving if they're sick anyway?  And why plan for the worst case scenario?

I'm EBF so I know she's getting alot of my immunities right now which makes me more okay with taking her out. I took her to run errands a few days after getting discharged.

We took DS out at 2 weeks old and have been ever since.  We went to a family party at 8 weeks old where everyone except DS got sick afterwards (stomach bug).  Go figure!  My niece "forgot" to tell everyone her LO was sick the day before.  Grrr....

In my family they take the kids out even when they are sick.  So I'm trying to plan ahead.  I don't want to find out they are sick the day of and then get stuck home with the baby anyways.  But I'm having my mom and grandmother over for dinner, I'm just skipping out on the in-laws dinner with all the rest of the family.  Hubby will go to both dinners.  I thought I was being overprotective a little too, but I also think I'm going to end up with the sick kid possibly, so I have to make the best decision for us right now.  After this, we will be out and about a bunch!!

My son, now five, had fever at four weeks and had to have a spinal tap. It was really scary. He was EBF. I thought he had to have the spinal because I had GBS positive at birth.   I just had another baby three weeks ago. I do take her out because I get stir crazy and out of necessity with four kids. I try to keep her in her carrier covered up though.
