Boy names on girls

This is a rant/vent.

At work right now we are doing a program for elementary aged kids.  The kids are sent a letter home and the parents call back if they want their child to participate.  We don't know the kids' sexes, only their names and age.

When I call the parents of a Tyler, I shouldn't be getting a snotty attitude back when I call Tyler a "he" and you correct me with a "she".  I didn't know that I can't assume that the child would be a boy since its a BOY name.  I guess every phone call will have to refer to every child on the phone as "he or she".

I've heard of Taylor being a neutral name but Tyler is 100% a boy's name.  I would have responded with "Don't be snotty with me because you gave your daughter a boy's name."

"But it's so cute!" gag. This is my least favorite trend.

I love Rowan for a boy and DH looked it up, he said he saw a lot of girls with the name. I said, everything is used on girls nowadays! I used the example of Riley which he likes a lot, which is used MORE on girls now.

Y'know some parent is going to be indignant over the he/she option, too.

"Obviously little Remington is a GIRL! Remy is totes a girl name. I'm surprised you didn't know that."

Good luck :

I'll second this.  And might I add.. parents who go ballistic if you mispronounce their badly spelled name.

I have an acquantaince that corrects me and gets indignant every time I mispronounce her daughter's awkward name.  I just avoid saying it now.

This. Obviously my daughter has a boy's name. Parents from her MDO program have called asking if my son would be able to sub for their child. I politely correct them and move on. I'm the one who chose to give her that name and completely understand when people don't know. No need to be snippy about it. Some people are way too sensitive.

True but as a girl with a boy name, Randi, although yes its happened my whole it's still incredibly annoying.

This made me LOL. I always assume the kind of people who use the word "totes" in conversation are the same kind of people who give their kids so-called unisex names. You know, because it's totes adorbs.

what is even worse is I met a lady once and I asked her what her daughter's name was. She told me it was Dillon and totally defended it right away by saying "I know its a boy's name". I thought it was strange that she said that because I obviously knew her kid was a little girl.

I would have done something similar.  With the kids' ages being provided to you I would have said something like:

I bet you've been getting that a lot for the past ____ years.  Probably something you should have thought of before giving your child a boy's name.

All of this. I gave my daughter a traditionally male name. I am 100% aware that she may just be the only female Everett on the planet. I would *never* get upset at someone assuming she was a boy based on her name. That's idiotic.

Nothing is more discouraging than unappreciated sarcasm.

LOL! This made me seriously giggle.

I'm a fan of the occasional boy's name for a girl, but you really can't get mad at somebody for not knowing when they're only looking at the name.
