He won't sleep!!!

I am at the end of my rope.  The stress is killing me.  I have a two and a half year old and an almost 11 month old and the baby won't sleep.  He used to love his naps, but has always gotten up to nurse several times a night.  We can't do it anymore.  My husband is so exhausted with the baby crying all night.  He is healthy.  I am always suspicious of teething pain. We try hyland's teething tablets, orajel, baby tylenol, nothing works.  He screams and screams.  He nurses and wakes an hour later.  We did the Ferber method with his sister and she finally started sleeping through the night around now but he seems to be getting worse and worse.  It is a tooth and nail fight to get him to nap too.  He is so tired.  I am so tired.  Any advice will be helpful. And he won't cosleep either.  He tosses and whines until we put him in his crib but he just won't sleep long.

Have you tried Motrin for the teething pain? Tylenol never worked for us.

Have you tried Ferber with him? If it worked with your DD I'm guessing you are not opposed to it. Give your DH some earplugs and give it a shot.

We are trying Ferber but he just screams and screams.  It doesn't seem to be getting better :(  I will try Motrin, thank you for the tip.

Have you talked to his pedi? Could it be possible reflux?

If not you may want to try "extinction" which is a CIO method that Weissbluth talks about in "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child." The Ferber method may upset your son more because you are going in the room. With extinction, you don't go in. It may seem tough but some babies get more upset if you go to them.

For us, going in at intervals made it SO much worse. It was so hard, but really the longest she ever cried was an hour off and on (never solid - she'd cry for a minute or two, stop for five minutes, cry for a minute) and really only the first night.

It sort of sounds like you've done this...I would work on naps first. My daughter sleeps a million times better on nights she gets good naps. Sleep really does beget sleep.

If you can get him to nap, that might lead to better luck with sleep at night.

Thanks ladies, I may try extinction.  The screams are awful to endure.  He doesn't have any reflux issues, he eats great, happy kid with a nap, but will not sleep.
