What to expect at initial appt?

I had my IVF consult scheduled for December but they just had a cancellation so I will be going in on Wednesday! Yay! What should I expect? At least now I have very little time to obsess over it.

Some of you commented on the projected cost of IVF in my area - $25,000. Here's the breakdown. It makes a little more sense now that it is all explained:

  • $4,000 for the work-up prior to the cycle, possibly covered by your insurance carrier.
  • $3,000 -$7,000 for the medications needed during the cycle.
  • $12,415 for the IVF cycle itself which includes ultrasounds and blood work during ovarian stimulation, retrieval, transfer and surgical rooms.  An additional $430 for anesthesia provided by South Denver Anesthesia Associates.
  • $2,600 additional for ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection).
  • $975 additional for cryopreservation (freezing) of embryos.

TTC #1 for Dh, #2 for me. HSG clear. Low AMH and endo. Multiple Clomid w/TI cycles - all BFNs. 2 IUIs with Clomid and 1 with Femara - more BFNs. IVF#1 25R, 15M, 15F. 5DT of two perfect 4AA blasts! Positive HPT at 5dp5dt. Beta #1 6dp5dt - 72. Beta #2 8dp5dt - 285. Beta #3 10dp5dt - 793. Both babies have strong beautiful heartbeats! Baby B miscarried at 7 weeks. Baby A is holding on through miscarrying her twin, sub-chorionic hematoma, and complete placenta previa. Stick, baby, stick!

Based on your costs and the anesthesia company, are you at CC.RM? (if not, you can ignore most of my post)  I am as well, with Dr. Su.rrey.  If so, the IVF consult was fairly basic.  The RE will go over your past medicated cycles to see if you learned anything, what your chances for IVF probably are, whether he'd initially recommend transferring 1 or 2 embies, etc., and then answer any questions you have.

After the consult, you'll have to schedule the one day workup (ODWU), where you'll have a 1 hour IVF presentation from the nurses, any other testing your RE may recommend (for us it was a sperm chromatin test and hysteroscopy), do your b/w for STD testing, have a meeting with your IVF nurse, meeting with the office admin re costs, meeting with the embryology lab for consent stuff, and at the end of the day, another regroup with your RE.  It really does take up almost a whole day. For us, we basically had to take a break month to do the ODWU and wait for your results.  They say they won't give you an IVF calendar until all your results are back, but they gave me a tentative calendar with my specific protocol at the end of the ODWU.

If you have any other CC.RM questions, feel free to pm me!  Good luck!

IVF #1 (EPP) 13R/10M/9F, 5DT 1-4AA blast, beta #1-148, beta #2-322, 5 frosties!

Thank you! Yes, I think I'm moving to CCRM. That's great. I feel better knowing what to expect. Do you like the clinic? How come the ODWU took a month break? Were you just waiting for results? I'm early in my cycle right now (CD 6) so I know I'll have to wait a month but I'm hoping to get started at the end of December.

Yes, I really like the clinic.  So far, we love Dr. Su.rrey, I always feel better after talking with him.  I also really like the nurses and staff.  They are all very responsive, patiently answer my massive list of questions I have every time I go in. :-)

For the month break, we did our IVF consult during our last IUI, when that failed, we scheduled the ODWU.  The hysteroscopy had to be after AF was finished, but before I ovulated, so it was around CD10.  By then, given my protocol (EPP), it was too late to start that cycle.  So we had to wait for the next CD1 to start.  They also wouldn't let me do an IUI and hysteroscopy in the same cycle.  Otherwise, I might have done a 3rd one that cycle just in case.

Thanks! I already have a massive list of questions. I think I'm right around the same schedule that you were on. I'll have to do a hysteroscopy but I'll have to wait for my period then the month off... so maybe January then.

Good luck on your consult.  Hopefully you won't need to move on to IVF!
