Car seat adn cold weather

I live in MI and it is getting really cold out.  My LO is three weeks old and I am not sure if I should by a snow suit/sack.  I use the JJ Cole sherpa lined car seat blanket that zips up with fleece on the outside.  A lot of my friends with kids said don't bother buying a suit.. I do bundle her up but worry that she'll be too cold.  Do I need to buy this?

Definitely no snow suit or jacket in the car seat (this is true for always - even in the convertible seat).  It can compress in a crash, leaving the straps too lose and allowing the baby to come out of the seat completely.  Hats and mittens, fleece/warm clothes and a nice fluffy blanket OVER the car seat straps.

Edited for word correction.

All of this. I live in Maine so I understand where you're coming from. LO is 7 wks and currently I put a warm outfit, blanket and the fleece cover thing over the car seat and he stays warm enough!

I have fleece jackets that are part of outfits. They fit him well so that's okay to go in the car seat right?

No coats and nothing that goes behind baby so that it is between baby and the car seat
either.

We live in VA Beach so it doesn't get too cold here...a friend of ours bought a snow suit for LO and one was given to us for next year, but we really won't use it unless we're outside and he's not in his car seat. With DS1, we lived in FL so we didn't need any cold weather gear but talking with other moms (one is even from Canada), they all said long-sleeved outfits with the car cover with keep them perfectly warm enough!
