Critique my registry...

I noticed someone else posted asking for some registry help. I am also wondering how mine looks to the STMs out there. Yeah, I know I have a TON of books on there...I just can't help myself when it comes to books, lol. Does everything else look good? I would appreciate any thoughts on the subject. Thanks!

I swear people should charging to look at others' registries. Just kidding. Wink

Here are my thoughts off the bat:

way too many clothes. Are you having a shower? People will bring clothes on their own and it probably won't be the stuff you registered for.

I'd probably limit the towel sets to one and maybe add on some more washcloths.

I'm a book person to, but maybe cut it down a little. Wink I had a huge list at first as well, but then I realized I'd rather people buy the other items on my list instead so I went to different bookstores and read the books (over time). If I didn't want to read it again or show DH, I cut it from the list. Because let's be honest, babies often find a handful of books that they love. And by love I mean ask you to read over and over again.

Other than that I think it looks good.

I'm a FTM so take this for what its worth - my sister suggested registering for 2 mattress pads.  The top is quilted so any seepage gets soaked into that and then stopped by the water proof barrier.  If you have an explosion or leak, you'll need to take it off to wash it with the sheets.

I'd also go with 2 of your sleep sacks for the same reason.  If you have a midnight change of clothing, you'll still need a backup blanket.

Ditto the way too many clothes, especially newborn stuff.  Here's a tip as well: Gerber sizes are notoriously small.  I would equate a Gerber newborn size to be preemie size, probably.  When I wear Gerber on my kids, it is always a size ahead of what they are in in all their other clothes.

Way too many books. Between the books and the clothes, I was wondering where all of your practical stuff was- those didn't start until the bottom of page 1.  I'd cut down on the books, clothes and toys.

Ditto previous comments. Waaaay too many clothes and books. You'll get plenty of those anyway and that's something you can buy yourself and pick out what you want.

I'd honestly get rid of the clothes and books or just keep a few "priority" ones for you as people often like picking out their own clothes and book favorites for you.

I'm not sure of your climate but maybe a warmer receiving blankey or car seat cover if it's chillier where you come from.

Bumbo?

Swaddlers or swaddling blankets.

Bath products (shampoo, ect.)

More teethers.

Carseat toy bar.

As a guest I would never buy clothes from Amazon. I'd stop at Carter's on my way to the shower. I agree with PP, cut down on clothes, books and toys.

I think you have a lot of cloths, toys, and books- I'd scale back a bit since these are things people tend to buy off-registry a lot anyways.  Or hide them for now and add them back if most of your items have been purchased.  I'd add:

- Swaddle-me wraps

-Aden and Anais swaddle blankets (great even if you don't swaddle)

- More bottles (it looks like you're planning to pump- if so, get a bunch of cheapie bottles to pump into in addition to the ones you want to feed LO with)

- Nursing covers

-Burp cloths, burp cloths, BURP CLOTHS

- Bath products

- Small bath toys- little squeezy fish/ducks/animals

- Waterpoof flannel mats- use these whenever you set LO down on your bed or the couch- they're very leaky (both ends) for the first few months.

-Baby crack machine/sound/light machine

-Thermometer- one rectal and one head scan type

- Comb, nail clippers, nail files, nasal aspirators

If you aren't using the snuzzler in the stroller, take it off your list (the piddlepad too). If it didn't come with the car seat, it's a safety hazard. I second the car seat cover. Here's a couple shower cap style that get two thumbs up:

http://www.amazon.com/Tivoli-Couture-Stroller-New-York/dp/B0048BPH7I/ref=sr_1_37?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1352761367&sr=1-37

http://www.amazon.com/Jolly-Jumper-Sneak-Infant-Carseat/dp/B001LPNH2G/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ba_1

And I agree, that's a lot of clothes and books.

We don't use a mattress pad for LO and I am soooo happy we haven't. First off, some of the mattress pads have too much cushion and in my opinion shouldn't be on the market for a newborn. It's going to increase the likelihood of SIDS/suffocation risk..perhaps not as much at the beginning if LO sleeps on his/her back but once they roll onto their bellies I wouldn't feel comfortable with creating any more cushion there. Second.... why bother? The matress with a sheet on it is plenty comfortable for baby and if LO poops/pees you just take the sheet off and wipe it down with a cleansing cloth and bam you're done(assuming you are getting a mattress with a plastic cover).

Anyways...just my opinion on that item

Thanks so much for all the opinions!

I will definitely delete just about all the clothes. Yeah, I know people will just buy what they think is cute for clothes, but I figured I would attempt to point them in the direction of the basics (onesies and sleep n plays) in the first few sizes. I'm definitely not attached to them, so they are as good as gone.

Thanks for the thoughts on mattress pads. I actually work as an infant caregiver at a daycare center, and now that I think about it, mattress pads for infants just seem really silly...just an extra layer to wash! Ha!

I think I'm going to leave the books; the reason being that I will buy just about any that anyone else doesn't buy. Between work and my nieces and nephews I have read almost all of them and so I know that I want them all. Some of the only ones I haven't read are the train books, and those are a must because my DH is a railroad nut, lol.  :)

As far as burp cloths, I am thinking that I can use the larger size of plain pre-fold diapers until LO is big enough to wear them as diapers. Hopefully, by then he won't be spitting up too much. Crossing my fingers on that one!

I've not been planning to swaddle, but what I'm hearing is that swaddle blankets are nice to have anyway?

I was actually thinking I should add a carseat cover, so I appreciate the suggestions there.

Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions! I appreciate it!

I have to say- you have an awesome assortment of books- pretty much all of DS's favorites!  You can absolutely use cloth diapers as burp cloths- we used disposable diapers but bought 2 big packs of the pre-fold cloth ones to use as burpies.  DS wasn't a big spitter, but you do need to use something when you burp them and they're also good to put under LO's head when nursing to catch drips and wipe their mouths.

The big swaddle blankets (i.e. Aden and Anais) are great multi-purpose blankets- they're big enough to use as an impromptu nursing cover, to keep the car seat covered/shaded when in the stroller, you can lay them out on the floor for tummy time, use as a nap blanket in warmer months, etc, etc.  The flannel swaddles are useless, we just used them as big burp cloths.  One pack of those would be good, but don't need more.

The swaddle wraps are really only useful if you're planning to swaddle- some babies love it, some hate it.  If yours sleeps better when swaddled, these wraps are a life saver- MUCH easier to get baby into, and you don't need to worry about them coming unswaddled and having a loose blanket in the crib.  I know that for me and several friends, when we stared using these, LOs started sleeping hours longer, but again, not every baby likes these.

You may not be planning on swaddling, but do you have a plan that you can use if your baby has a strong Moro reflex that isn't swaddling?  My DD literally would not have slept for her first two months without a swaddle of some sort (or tummy sleep, but I could not bring myself to go against the recommendations of my doctor).  You want a swaddle product on hand.  You may even want the Miracle Blanket or a SwaddleMe.

You need a few covers for your changing table pad.

Have you seen Lucie's List?  It has a really good run down of the basics you'll need. http://www.lucieslist.com/

That's another thing I never bought. IMHO it's just another thing to wash and we know it will get poop all over it anyways. I have a soft plastic changing table pad that I wipe down with a natural cleansing cloth if there's a mess and bam done. Baby is only on it less than a minute so the whole comfort thing isn't even a problem.

I put down wee-wee pads on top of the cover so if it gets dirty, I just throw the pad out.

I would add a couple of extra sets of sheets for both the crib and the pack n' play.  I  underestimated the number of sheets a child can go through in the middle of the night!
