Work shower?

My mother has asked to throw me a baby shower in march ( I'm due in April) and I was very thrilled because her and I have similar taste in things and I just know it will be fun for all the guests. It's not going to be a very large party, just close friends and family which I think is perfect but I was planning on inviting a few ladies from work I'm very close to. The problem is the other day the girls were bringing up baby showers and asked if I was having one, I told them my mother is throwing me one closer to the due date and I'm planning on sending an invitation their way, they all kind of brought up having one just at work ( because I work about an hour away from where I live and the shower , I'm assuming, will be closer to my area). I didn't mind the idea, but I've never known someone to throw their own baby shower and I know none of the girls are going to throw me one because we all have too much work on our plates right now plus I don't really want to put that on anyone. ( I already feel guilty that my mother is paying for this all by herself so I've offered to pay for the invitations she picks as well as favors and some other stuff)

I guess my question is, should I just invite them to the one my mother is throwing ( even though they most likely wont show due to the distance) or should I just have a small thing at work? I was thinking about maybe just bringing cupcakes and saying goodbye because I won't be returning after I deliver my daughter.

I have been to many work showers, they usually happen at lunch time and it was a potluck, everyone brought something, but somebody was in charge, to get the word out, reserve a room, etc.

If someone at the office coordinates a work shower, that's great.  Don't plan it yourself though, that's awkward.

I wouldn't invite work people to a shower outside of work unless they were people that I frequently socialized with outside of the office.

Invite them to your mom's shower. If they want a work shower then they will organize one.

This!  Whether or not they plan a shower for you, I still think "goodbye" cupcakes  and a little socialization would be a nice idea.  I wouldn't plan your own work shower, though.

thanks :) I think I'll just do the cupcakes and send them a birth announcement card after she comes. I'm only close with 5 or 6 girls so I thought the whole work shower was pointless anyways and I wasn't about to throw my own baby shower.

My work threw me a surprise one.  It was just in the afternoon, an hour tops, just a cake and some cookies.  Some contributed to a group gift; some did their own gifts.

Since none of them are actually planning it, it isn't happening.  You don't need to throw it.  Scratch that...you shouldn't throw it.

You can invite them to your mom's if you want, but I'd make it really clear that you understand that they might not be able to make it.  An hour's drive is a big commitment for a co-worker, in my opinion. I'd probably leave them off the invite list for that reason anyway.  Sounds like they were kind of trying to get out of it anyway.

If you wanted, you could bring in cookies or something AND the baby after he/she is born - like a month or so after.  Since you aren't coming back, it could just be a quick drop in.

ETA: for clarity
