Paint on walls - designs (how do you do it?)

I've seen a lot of posts with pictures of nurseries that have things like diamonds painted different colors - these are not decals from what i can tell but actual painted shapes - how do you do this?

Something with straight lines, like diamonds can just be taped off and painted.  You have to use a ruler and pencil in the lines first before you tape to be sure they're accurate.  Other things, I suppose some people are just really good artists, if you're talking hand painted murals, etc.

I bought a stencil of Etsy.  It's time consuming, but worth it!

Tape, a level, long ruler and a TON of patience!

We did a simple thick gray stripe about eye level across one wall, bordered on top & bottom by thinner white stripes.  What a pain in the a$$!  It took forever to get it all to line up straight.  It didn't help that we live in an older house and the floors have settled and nothing is level.

If you are going to do an all-over pattern like that on a wall, I suggest wallpaper.  Still difficult as you need to line it up straight, but seems much easier.

THIS for sure :) In one room I did one large stripe with two smaller accent stripes on it, and in DS's new big boy room I did horizontal stripes over the whole wall. It takes a lot of time to tape off something this "simple" and a LOT LOT LOT of patients. I redid the tape a couple times because it didn't seem just right.

They do make some really great stencils now but that also takes a lot of patients and time!! But will give you a fabulous accent wall!! Good luck!!

This. After taping, make sure you paint the base color over the edge of the tape before you put the accent color up. This way, the accent color won't bleed under the tape.

Also, peel up the tape about a half hour after painting. You will be less likely to pull up paint with the tape if it isn't completely  dried.
