Well, that was fast.

We already have our diagnosis.  MH has congenital bilateral absense of the vas deferens.  From what I understand, it is a mutation of the cystic fibrosis gene. I need to have genetic testing before we can move foward, but our only option is IVF with ICSI.  This is pretty rare, but our uro is 100% positive MH is producing sperm, he basically just doesnt have the correct parts to move them out of the testicles.

Our next step is to meet with a genetic counselor, then an RE.

I feel so sad.  I don't really have any other words.

I'm so sorry about the diagnosis.  But, at least they know what is wrong and there are ways to get around it, right? It sounds like with Ivf, your chances will still be great! I think all the diagnostic testing is the worst part of IF. Once you know what you are facing it gets a lot easier and you will be able to move forward with a more positive outlook.

Even though its not the best news its not the worst either. Now you know the problem and can move forward to fixing it. Your one step closer than you were yesterday. Im very sorry about it not being what you were hoping for but hopefully they can figure out how to get those swimmers out of there and get you KU with out to much of a delay. Wishing you the best!!!

This.

If they're 100% sure he's producing sperm and they can go in there and get it, that's kind of awesome news! I'm sorry you're sad and that it will be a harder road than you hoped for, but in the end it will be worth the journey, right?  I hope that you feel better soon and that the rest of the genetic testing goes well!

I'm sorry about the diagnosis! Like PP said it's good news that they are sure there are sperm in there. It is scary to be told IVF with ICSI is the only option, I remember that day too well. Atleast there is a chance, keep your head up! Good luck to you and keep us updated!

Wow. I'm sorry that you got such a diagnosis, but it must be a relief to have a diagnosis. That's really good that the uro is positive your H is producing good sperm! Best wishes to you and your H that you have a relatively stress free and smooth IVF cycle!

Just take some time to allow it to soak in, it's really overwhelming. Getting answers is good, but being told IVF is your only option is difficult to deal, it does give you hope, but let's not forget it still costs lots of $$ and no guarantees. Good luck!

I have a friend who's husband wouldn't ejaculate at all, literally nothing at all.  They had to extract the sperm from him and then they got pregnant twice with IUI.

Not sure if my friend's husband's situation is similar to your husbands, but good luck to you.

If you don't mind a PAIF post, I'm here to say: allow yourself to receive and process this information. It's okay to be sad about it, and then you can move on. There is technology out there to help you guys with MFI. ICSI was certainly not at the top of our 2012 Wish List, but it helped us get to the top of that wish list!

Good luck!
It's okay to grieve the loss of your envisioned journey.

Thank you everyone who responded.  I am already feeling better.  I know we are lucky in so many ways, that MH is producing sperm and we do have a game plan.  The initial shock was overwhelming.  I think I will feel so much better once we get the genetic testing over with as well. We are going to do that ASAP and hope for summer 2013 for IVF #1.

Sorry I didn't quote, but to the poster who talked about IUI - apparently that wouldn't be an option for us because although MH is producing sperm, they are never leaving the testicles so they don't know how to move and would be unable to fertilize my egg.  That's why we need the ICSI.

Thanks so much!  Excited to get to know all the "faces" and stories over here. :)
