Vitamin Drops??

Are you bf gals giving vitamin drops (poly-vi-sol)?  My son is 8 weeks old and has not had them consistantly for several weeks. He hated the taste and they seemed to cause extreme fussiness when we put them in his bottle. He is being treated for reflux and gas, so it may be aggravating that. He spits out the "vitamin bottle" like we had just given him a turd and cried off and on for hours. I ebf, but pump so that DH can feed him at night and I can get some rest. What do you ladies do? I am concerned about his iron and vitamin D levels, but there must be some other way.

I had that problem initially but someone on this board mentioned to aim the dropper toward the cheek.  Since I've been doing that my LO has been much better at taking it.  The pediatrician also told me I can put it in his bottle too but I have not tried that yet.

We just do the D-Vi-Sol per pediatrician's recommendation.  She said EBF babies don't need the extra iron and other vits.  We are giving them aimed at the cheek like PP said.

Google Carlson vitamin D drops too.  I think those are concentrated so you can just put one little drop on your nipple before BF'ing and that's all baby needs. I've never tried them, but I know a lot of moms on TB use them.

Good luck!

I need to get Vit D drops...I'm not giving iron or multi as it was never needed with DS. His iron levels were checked periodically and he was just fine. My doctor agreed that Vit D should be all DD needs. She also said a lot of babies have trouble with Poly-vi-sol, etc...so isn't just OPs!

I used to put it into breast milk in bottles but I felt so bad giving him a whole bottle of gross tasting milk. I tasted a tiny drop of the poly vi sol and it is disgusting. My poor baby! Now I put it directly into his mouth and feed him right after to get the taste out of his mouth. I put a bib on him and have a paper towel ready in case he spits some out.

We use the d vi sol drops and our LO likes it from the dropper or a bottle. I've tasted it and it doesn't taste bad and it smells like lifesavers candy. We put it in the side of his cheek when we give him the drops alone. Works great for us.

Are you taking still taking your prenatal vitamins?  My doctor asked about giving her drops but said if I was still taking my vitamins she gets it through my breast milk.

I give DS Tri-vi-sol. It's Vit A,C, and D. These smell and taste like fruit and DS has no trouble with them. I have heard that the Iron in the Poly is what upsets LOs bellies. This is also the reason a lot of babies have trouble with Iron fortified formula like similac advance according to my pedi.

I use the Carlson Vitamin D drops for infants.  I bought it for $30 and it lasts 365 days (1 drop per day).  I put one tiny drop in one of her bottles each day and we're good to go.  If it's the weekend and she's not getting a bottle, then I just put the drop on my nipple.
