Options for gender reveal

so this was our original plan:

our anatomy scan is next Tuesday. Since the techs here are not allowed to tell you the gender, or tell you anything about what they see (the send the report to your care provider and they tell you at your next appt) - the receptionist at my midwife place said I could just call her the next day, since she has access to my records (they send everything over via email) and she could tell us that day and then we'd find out and just share the news on facebook or whatever

THEN my H came home one day saying we should have a gender reveal party with his family - so we would know, but they wouldn't and we'd have a cake and all that jazz

 NOW we're thinking of having my midwife write it on a peice of paper (scan is on tuesday, my appt is on thursday) and then we could get a cake made and neither one of us would know and we'd find out the same time as his family at the gender reveal party

 his family is really small.. so it's not going to be a big elaborate thing (it's also his birthday, so we were going to do a birthday lunch, cake type thing)

 but I don't know if I could wait those extra days to find out. i mean, i've waited this long so far.. can I wait a few days to find out with his family?? or should we just find out alone with just the 2 of us?? hmmmmmmm

well, I can't post where I live, but yes, it's ridiculous. You used to have to pay for the techs to tell, but now they just send everything over to your care provider. so, basically you're sitting in the ultrasound room in silence. I mean, they tell you "this is the arm/leg/head" whatever.. but they cant tell you if baby is healthy, or if something bad shows up - they just send it all to your dr

yup, it sucks.

tell me about it!! sometimes if you get a nice tech, they'll sneak it in and tell you, but most of them follow the strict rules.

I like just DH and I knowing for a little bit. Just a secret for the two of us before we tell everyone. I would sort of have a hard time revealing the sex and finding it out myself at the same time. Maybe I'm weird, but that's just how I feel. Out of all of those options, I would do the party but not have it be a surprise to you and your DH.

Our techs can't say anything either about the health of the baby, but they are allowed to say the sex thankfully.  To answer your question, it will be tough, but like you said, you have waited this long.  I would just wait for the cake and have a special moment with that.

We did our reveal the same exact way with our first. There's something about how once you have the results in your hand, the waiting just isn't as tough... I started to really look forward to cutting into that cake surrounded by loved ones.

 i'm in canada and every province is different. for example, you can't get an NT scan here if you're under 35 and no family history simply because they dont have enough machines and techs that know how to do it, whereas, in a different province, everyone can get an NT scan. 

and i did read an article where they were considering not giving out the gender until 30 weeks. hope they dont go down that route!!

I have heard this is an issue in British Columbia, for the same reason (gender selective abortions)

Which makes no sense since drs are still telling patients what they're having, unless they are withholding information on couples they are suspicious about

DH and I found out at the U/S. For our first child, I preferred it that way, to have our private surprise, and share it at the gender reveal later that day. I have no regrets :) 

We did cupcakes :)

I'm in the same boat. We'll find out the week before Christmas and when we go home a few days later my family's doing a small shower/gender reveal party (we live really far so it's the only time we'll be home during my pregnancy). My mom's wanting us to wait and find out with everyone for the surprise factor, but I dont think I can wait the extra week... tough choice, but I dont think we can go wrong, either way it was be an exciting surprise and a special moment!

we will hopefully find out when i go for the ultrasound at 18 weeks. we are planning on buy like little onesies or bibs that will reveal the gender and personally handing them to each person. our appt is on a friday afternoon so that weekend will be a busy one with going to see everyone and telling them in person.

I believe that the U/S techs aren't supposed to tell you anything about the U/S because they aren't licensed to analyze, they're just licensed to work the machine. I'm thinking it's something to do with avoiding malpractice. If it's a doctor or N.P., they'd tell you.

I'm in Ontario and you can get an NT scan at any age. Also, they can tell you the sex of the baby here. I don't see why not. It's just another body part. I am interested to know what province you are from that has these restrictions.

I think a cake with a few close family members is fine and fun. You've waited this long, a few more days won't hurt. After your appt take your envelope from the midwife right to the bakery and then you won't be tempted to open it.

I personally will be finding out with just my H when the baby is born, but there is nothing wrong with what you want to do.

I am doing something simular. H doesn't know I went to find out..only I didn't find out..I had them wrap a blue/pink frame to give him and the gender in a envelope for a cake. His birthday is the 26th, so I'm inviting our close family and friends.nothing too big..to a restaurant and he'll have a birthday cake/gender reveal..Its already been a very hard week not to go peak in the bag and see what color frame and keep the secret from him that we could go find out right now since it's in the closet..and I still have a whole nother week to go! its so hard!!
