Anyone have to do follow up U/S?

Hello,
I had my 18 week u/s today have a few questions that the technician wouldn't/couldn't answer.
After the tech was done she said that she needed to consult the Dr before showing us the pictures.
Once she returned she said I would need to make a follow up appt for 2 weeks because she was not able to get enough structural pictures of the baby.
She refused to answer any of our questions and said our Dr would share the results with us.
She then showed us baby and there was a lot of movement/activity. She wouldn't share the heart rate we saw it was 142 bpm.
My question is what structural pictures is she talking about and is this an indicator that something could be wrong?

It sounds like the technician was not able to get all of the shots she needed. This happens sometimes. If you are worried, see if you can schedule an appointment with the OB to discuss the u/s results.

Typically, u/s techs don't comment on health stuff for the baby. My technician was only able to tell DH and I the baby's heart beat and that my baby is a boy. Everything else had to be discussed with the MFM.

i would try not to worry.

I had a follow up or level 2 with my first for a bright spot on her heart (echogenic focus) it is a soft marker for downs despite being very common in healthy babies. The tech said nothing to us. All a/s are gone over by radiologists who give a report to your ob/midwife. At lest in my experience that's how it's worked. Hopefully it's just a technicality of the tech not bring allowed to disclose/interpret stuff to patients.

I have to go back in 2 weeks b/c he wouldn't roll over and she couldn't see his spine, she even had the table angled back so my feet were higher than my head and had me lay on my side but still couldn't get it.

Sounds like they just couldn't get all the measurements. Where I go, the techs can't tell you anything, not even the sex. She told me that she is only there to take the measurements, not to interpret them.

18 weeks can be a little early for an a/s - techs much more prefer to do it after 20 weeks.

i had my first a/s at 18 weeks 5days, I had to go back for a second one 4 weeks later.  The second one watch clearer.

not to scare you, but my second looked worse than my first a/s and I am now being referred to high risk.

This is pretty normal, especially considering you're only 18 weeks. A lot of techs won't even do the a/s before the 20th week for this very reason. The more developed the baby, the better.

All she means is she was not able to get all the pictures she needs. This could be because of babies position or because baby just isn't developed enough yet which, again, is normal considering gestational age. It definitely doesn't mean anything is wrong with your baby or there is need for panic. Just assume baby was positioned akward or it's a little too early to see everything the tech needs to see.

I had mine @ 18 weeks and the tech said that she couldn't get a clear enough view of the chambers of the heart and the kidneys. She said it looked good, but it was "fuzzy" so she couldn't be certain. My OB has scheduled me for a second U/S, I will be 24 weeks at this one. It is always a bit concerning to have to repeat a "test" like this, but I'm sure that in most cases it is nothing and they just want to be sure when you are a little further along.

This thread is interesting. I have my anatomy scan next wk at 19 wks and 3 days. Does this mean they aren't going to get good shots???

Not necessarily. There is always a possibility, regardless of how far along you are. It all just depends on babies position and/or development at the time of your scan.

Techs aren't allowed to share any information. I had my anatony scan at 17.5 weeks, and the my OB said that the tech wasn't able to get all the measuremets she needed of the heart, so I had to schedule another appointment for 4 weeks later. 18 weeks is SLIGHTLY early for an anatomy scan, so that's probably what the problem was. I bet your LO will be perfect at your next u/s. Just think of it as a bonus ultrasound.

I had to have 4 anatomy scans because Olivia was moving around too much each time and wasn't cooperating.  The pictures of her heart and kidneys were really hard to get.

The U/S tech isn't a doctor or a nurse, maybe they aren't allowed to tell you much because it's not a medical diagnosis coming from them.

I wouldn't be concerned unless the doctor tells you something is wrong, it's not easy to take pictures of a moving target.

The hosptial wouldn't even let me schedule an A/S any earlier than 20 weeks because they want to be able to see everything and it's all more likely to be developed between 20-22 weeks. It'd say you were just a little early and the tech could have been new or just couldn't say anything.

I have to go back in 4 weeks for a fetal echo. My MFM said he wasn't able to get detailed enough pictures of the heart, but that it looks fine. He just wants to be sure. It's not that unusual to have to go back for follow up if the dr can't get the right pictures.

panacea05:
Techs aren't allowed to share any information.

Not necessarily, it depends on the policy of the office.  With both of my pregnancies, the tech has been able to explain exactly what measurements she's taking and all of that AS she's doing it.  I know some offices don't do it that way though.

As others have said, 18w is just a tad on the early side for an a/s.  It's actually somewhat common to have to go back for a follow up, depending on how "cooperative" baby is.  Try not to worry, and take it as another opportunity to see your baby :)

I have to go back in a few weeks because baby was breech and completely dead asleep and would not move! She couldn't get all the pictures she needed, and we are lucky we even found out the sex!

As for her not telling you certain things, she probably can't. I am guessing it's a liability thing, and she might not even be able to diagnose, just give the doctor what she thinks might be going on.

We had to go for a second A/S too.  Nothing was the matter at all, baby just wasn't in the right position to get many of the measurements they needed.  HTH :)

I wouldn't worry too much about this.

U/S techs aren't allowed to give you much to go on. They aren't doctors, and they could get in a mountain of trouble for even guaranteeing the gender. I'm an RN, and this is my first baby, so I questioned everything the tech was doing, not because I thought her to be stupid, but because I was curious as to what I saw. She pointed out things like bladder, heart, etc, and I was able to make out some things for myself (Such as the chambers of the heart, valves, that kind of thing). Anyway, they're not allowed to do anything really, but take the pictures.

They explained to me that if they couldn't get all the measurements they needed/wanted, then I would need to come back for them to try again. At the end of mine, they had a hard time getting a full view of the spine, so they had me empty my bladder and walk around a little. I felt her flip again, and she was able to get the spine. If she couldn't they were going to get me to come back.

She left the room, saying she wanted to run all the measurements by the Dr, and then she came back, said the Dr said we were ok to leave, and that was that. She may know what all the measurements are supposed to be, but shes not allowed to tell you "all is well." That is the Dr's job. :)
