I had brown discharge around the time my period was due, and I was pregnant. The test was positive when I took it three days after the spotting. I had taken one a few days before the spotting, and it was negative.
So, yes, it's possible. Tell your doctor you're not sure when your LMP was, and he/she might schedule you for an early ultrasound to date the pregnancy.
