Water???

My mother keeps asking if I give my LO water?  Is this ok?  I haven't yet but when I read the sheet my ped gave us, it mentioned something about ok to give a little water especially when they seem to wanting to eat earlier than usual?  Does anyone do this?  I don't think it's right but I wonder sometimes if my LO is just thirsty and not hungry.

I'm only give my daughter (2 1/2 months) water when she's constipated. Sometimes I add a little Karo syrup, just to get things moving. But if you're breast feeding your baby shouldn't need anything but a boob. =]

Babies don't need water until 6 months, and it is unsafe before then.

Just make sure it's FILTERED water, and you'll be fine. But if you don't feel he or she needs it, don't bother. =]

No. Water is dangerous to newborns. It can introduce allergens, affect gut flora, fill up the baby's tiny tummy so they eat less milk (causing weight loss and malnutrition), and can cause water intoxication. (Source: kellymom)

This is perfect information. Water is not good for babies. My pedi said no water before 12 months.

In addition to the above, giving water to an infant can also cause seizures.  Do not give your baby water.

NO! Don't give your baby water until your LO starts solids. If you give it too early, he or she could fill up on the water and not get the proper nutrients needed in either breastmilk or formula.

Also, if you're worried about the hunger vs thirst thing, I was told by my MW (if you're breastfeeding) that the foremilk in breastmilk satisfies their thirst while the hindmilk satisfies their hunger.

WOW.  I was given totally different information from the pedi.  My LO was wanting to eat every hour (EFF).  He told me to strech the feedings to at least 2 hrs.  so his little tummy is not contantly digesting and making him fussy. And to give water in between (Nursery water, what I mix the formula with).  I don't give it often though.  Guess I need to rethink things and maybe find a new pedi...

I am giving my baby (10 weeks old) water- about half an ounce daily so that I can mix in briar rose to help her immune system & probiotics as her ped. recommended.  We have been doing this for about a week.  She has been fine.

My pedi said not to until 4months at least so I don't give DD water.

Formula/breastmilk satisfies a baby's hunger AND thirst. Water is not needed and too much can be harmful but a few drops are not going to hurt. Think about it, when you are mixing up a formula bottle, you are never going to consistently put the EXACT same amt of water to the drop. Sometimes, you might put a teaspoon more water and just not realize it, sometimes maybe a teaspoon less.

With all that being said, what reason would you have for giving an infant water? I can see giving a dropper of water to get rid of hiccups or something but other than that, there is no reason to give a baby water.

Honestly, I would go pedi shopping. It is very outdated information that babies younger than 6 months need water.

My DD had a film on her tongue from formula (not thrush). Her pediatrician said half an ounce of water would help, it did.

But the film isn't hurting anything.  Why get rid of it?

This. That is horrible advice. Newborns should be fed on demand. The baby could be going through a growth spurt and need to eat more often. But water should not be given. Definitely look for a new pedi.
