If you have GD

Hi ladies-

In my last pregnancy I gained too much weight (45 lbs), and I was borderline for GD. I sort of feel like I'm heading in that direction again and would like to nip it in the bud. I understand that eating for GD is basically cutting back on sugars, simple carbs, etc. and eating healthier, overall.

What's a typical day's diet look like for you?

It will likely vary depending on the person, but my dr. basically has me eating 15 carbs at breakfast, 15 carbs for 1st snack, 30-45 carbs at lunch, 15 carbs for 2nd snack, 30-45 carbs at dinner and then 15 carbs for 3rd snack.  All snacks and meals of course should include protein  My dr. also suggests that I avoid dairy and fruits& for all meals except lunch.

I do want to add that you should talk to your doctor though; your situation could be a lot more different than mine.

My nutritionist gave me a chart:

Breakfast: 15carbs - 1 starch, 1-2 protein, 1-2 fats

snack: 15carbs - 1 protein, 1 starch, fruit, or milk

Lunch: 30-45 carbs - 1 milk, 2 starch, 3-4 protein, 1-2 fats

Snack: 15 carbs - 1 protein, 1 starch, fruit, or milk

Dinner: 30-45 carbs - 1 milk, 2 starch, 3-4 protein, 1-2 fats

Snack: 30 carbs - 1 protein, 1 milk, 1 starch or fruit

I'm allowed to have as much "free foods" as I want, (proteins, fats, vegetables, herbs, salsa, diet soda, sugar free jello, ect)

dietitian said it's really important to have vegetables with every meal, it helps your body to process sugars correctly, also switch from white anything(bread, pasta, ect,) to wheat

I'm not allowed to have ANY of the following(although i cheat occasionally): Fruit Juice, Bagels, Baked Beans, Candy, Canned Fruit, Cakes, cookies, or pie, coffee creamer, sugary drink mix, flavored milk, honey, ice cream, instant hot or cold cereal, jam or jelly, muffin or donut, pudding or custard, soft drinks, sugar, syrup, pasta or pizza sauce(unless I make it myself) teriyaki sauce, barbeque sauce, ketchup

Now, I've still experimented with all of those things and I've found that some of the things on my restricted list will still not totally screw my sugars... so once you get your meter you'll probably do that a lot, too.

For me it was/is about eating the right amount of carbs and balancing the fat and protein in every meal/snack. The other ladies have the breakdown of carbs per meal doctors suggest but it's really hard to know how your body is reacting unless you are monitoring your blood sugars. You could always ask your dr for an early glucose test. Mine is Monday :/ since I had GD before. I'm preparing myself for bad news...

I had it with DD#1.  So far, no signs for this one.  (Passed first screen, will be tested again in about a month).

I blogged about my experience with it with #1, so if you want the full chart of what I had to eat, see here:

 http://voodoodolldiet.blogspot.com/2010/08/by-request-chart.html

The full blog is on blog spot.  It has entries about what I went through and the full experience, but that particular link is to the full chart on what I had to follow, food-wise.
