Are all these tests necessary?

Hey everyone,

I have some rather important health matters/doubts I need some counsel on possibly from others who have been there. Currently, I am 6 weeks pregnant (give or take a few days!). This seems like great news, and it was for all of a day. It is nothing against Little Bub at all, but it is really all about me and all about what has happened lately in the past couple days.

I waited until I was almost 2 weeks late to test, and it was all free and clear. I have not spotted or anything in that time period. If I had, I would have delayed testing longer, assuming that my period was arriving. Well, literally, two days after I found out, I did start to spot on my tissue. Well, long story short, it turned from pale pink on the tissue to premenstrual style brown smudging on my panties. I know, it's truly sexy.

As for pregnancy symptoms, I *used* to get very sore boobs in the morning, and some 30 second queesies. My breasts are still sore, but not like they were. Now, they feel the same as they do before a period. I don't have any more queesies. I might get some light cramping on my lower abdomen if I move around too much, but that's it. I've had no morning sickness, and my energy levels have always been the same.

So, I went to a doctor's, explained all this, and she just went by my word. She went through my cycles with me. I said to her that maybe this was a false positive and maybe my period is just *super* late. I did follow the instructions to the letter, but the test could be defective. Right before the appointment, I realized I should have taken a second pregnancy test. But, she was really confident that I was pregnant because of everything I told her. She didn't have me take another one. She told me it was a "threatened miscarriage", told me that everything could be fine, but also gave me three other horrible possibilities that it could be.

Meanwhile, I was sitting in the doctor's office; I wasn't physically *feeling* bad at all. I was just worried because of the brown spotting, and now she wants me to run a series of blood tests and an ultrasound to "see" what's going on.

For a lot of reasons that I won't go into, I feel right now like an idiot. I couldn't sleep last night dreading the possibility that I could wake up with horrible cramps and blood all over the place. I woke up this morning to find *NO SPOTTING*. I had blood taken out yesterday, but this morning I'm running through my head all these doubts.

Am I really pregnant at all? Is she just trying to wring more tests out of me (she insisted they were necessary) knowing that we'll have to pay out of pocket? It's a lot of money....

She told me that I needed to rest. So, I rested all last night *for nothing* (it feels). The kitchen is a disaster and I can just imagine the bugs attracted by the smell of leftover food on dinner plates. And I wonder.."is this necessary?"

I sit back on the bed, and now I feel a sharp shooting but very mild ache in my lower abdomen (because I got up to go to the bathroom and get dressed). It's really nothing to write home about it and I've experienced it off and on for at least a week or two now. My breasts aren't very sore at all.

And this is really bothering me. I'm trying not to stress, but I can't stop thinking about it. I've decided to go to the appointment today and have the other blood test, but before I schedule the ultrasound, I'm going to take another pregnancy test on my own. This is insane.

Am I being unreasonable here? Do these events really make sense to anyone else? I feel like an idiot, but at the same time, I don't know whether I *should* feel like an idiot.

Blood work and an early ultrasound are very common tests for early pregnancy, whether a miscarriage is suspected or not.

Think of it this way- once you get the results you'll know for sure if you're pregnant and you'll stop feeling this way.

Good luck!

False positives are very rare.  It sounds to me like you are experiencing normal early pregnancy symptoms (even the brown spotting).  I hate to say it but there's going to be a lot of "take a little easier" or guidance not to do something that you physically feel you can do but it's better safe than sorry.  Letting dishes sit for a day isn't going to turn your house into a disaster and it's better that you followed your doctor's advice.  And congrats :)

Spotting isn't unusual during pregnancy, especially when it's brown.  When it is red, you should worry.  Symptoms will come and go.  Some women don't feel any different during pregnancy.  And others, like me, are sick all the time. I had my first appointment at around 4 weeks and they drew 3 vials of blood and scheduled me for an early u/s at 8 wks.  Just try to stay calm and think positively.

Seconding PPs... and I promise your doctor isn't trying to "wring" tests out of you because she knows you're paying OOP. It's better to have testing done and know what the issue is (in case it's something fixable) or know that there's no issue at all so you can relax a little bit.

I just thought I should update, because I am feeling much better now. I got my first blood test back. Yep. I'm definitely pregnant, and my hormone levels are well within range for 6 weeks. The doctor seems confident everything is fine esp. as my spotting seems to have subsided the past day. I had bad cramps this morning, but as soon as I thought of something else, the cramps went away. She told me I can cancel the third blood test, but that I still needed the others just in case. She said some of the same things you folks have been saying. There are no guarantees in life, but I really have to relax, and i know that's important for the baby, too. It's really strange, because I don't feel like I'm pregnant. I feel like my regular self.

Thanks a lot for your responses. They actually matched everything the doctor was saying.
