XP June 11/NTTGPR Student Teach. Gift

Hey! My student teacher is finishing up in the next 2 weeks. I'm looking to put a class gift basket together for her. I'm writing a letter home to the parents of my class. She's an early childhood major w/the hopes of teaching Kindergarten. I feel like there's other stuff that I'm forgetting. Thanks!

This is the list I've compiled so far:

· Office supplies

o Staples

o Paper clips

o Fun colored pens/pencils

o Rubber bands

o Etc.

· Hand Sanitizer

· Pre-school-2nd grade level books

· Stamps

· Stickers

· Note pads (Post-its, or other cutesy note paper pads)

· Gift Certificate to a teacher supply store

Tissues?
Wet Ones (the wet naps)
Construction paper?
Maybe flash cards?

I was also thinking of maybe a little hand lotion/body wash set for her to use at home too? I don't know though. Or maybe her favorite candy or some cute candy to include?

Airborne supplements. I second the vodka, though make sure you find out what her preferred drink of choice is haha.

Do you have to provide your own office supplies now?   I taught high school for three years (about four years ago) and that was not the norm.   Sad state of the school's budget if so.

How about instant starbucks coffee?  Mug with lid? Flavored water packs?  Protein bar?

When I was student teaching, one of my associate teachers gave me a set of overhead pens and chalk in one of those holders that keeps your hands clean and prevents it from breaking. Those are things I've been able to use in my own teaching since then, and even in supply teaching when I can't find any chalk in the room.

I wouldn't have turned down booze, though ;)

ETA: I realize that a kindergarten/pre-school teacher wouldn't need overhead pens but the point is that relevant supplies are invaluable.

I work at a private christian school in a shaky economy.  If you budget right, then yes school covers it, but as a beginning teacher, she'll be begging, borrowing, and stealing worse than a public school first year!

Those are great! Starbucks VIA has been a lifesaver.

Also thought of some more for that age group:

glue sticks

construction paper pad

Does the school she will be working at have chalkboards or white boards? Get something she can use on either (extra chalk if a chalkboard, dry erase markers and low-fume board cleaner if a white board).

I know my ex's sister is a school teacher and she is often buying stuff for the kids in general. Maybe a gift card she can use at a kids store or a local thrift store if she wants to buy special toys for the classroom or something?

Yes This was my thought a mug she could use maybe a cute teacher mug or a mug with her inital on it with some coffee or hot chocolate packets.

When I finished student teaching I received a coffee mug with a Dunkin Dounuts gift card, and a thank you  card book from the class. Each student had made a thank you picture and the teacher bound it with string. It was very cute and I still have it.

I would not give anything that has a shelf life like wipes or glue. You do not know that she will be able to get a teaching job quickly especially if she is graduating mid year. Since it is probable she wouldn't get her own classroom until next fall.  I graduated in 2010 with dual certification in k-6 elementarty and k-12 special ed and I just got a full time teaching position this year. So if I had been given glue or wipes they would be dried up by now. Plus most schools provide basic school supplies.

If you want to do classroom things I would do things like favorite read aloud books, a bell/chime(to get the classes attention), pencil holders,  fun pointers, classroom music(especially if you use music in your classroom)... Think of unique things that  you have in your classroom now that she has begun to use that you don't find in every classroom.

Wow! You're lucky! I graduated in 09 and am still waiting on my elementary job. I'm teaching prek now, which is fun, but not where my heart is. :

These are great ideas and I added some of them to my examples of stuff to add. Thanks!
