The "after care" list

Hello ladies!!

Looking for input.  I want to start compiling supplies for what I will need after I get home from the hospital.  What should I have at home waiting for me for recovery.  I am a super planner and want to be prepared and buy soon as I strongly dislike christmas shopping crowds lol.  I have heard I will want to have lanolin at home for breastfeeding, long absorbent pads, witch hazel (which by the way...where is this located in stores lol), and perhaps some good old cheap granny panties for the bleeding as well.  Any suggestions to add to the list?

Currently at home:
Witch hazel (I think I found it in the first aid aisle at the drugstore)
Cotton pads
Tucks pads
Colace (forgot that I have this from 1st tri's zofran days!)
A couple types of menstrual pads
Lanolin cream
Disposable nursing pads
One pair of soothie breast pads (in fridge, may get more)
Underwear that I won't mind throwing away
Nursing tops (tanks, sleep bras)

Will bring home from hospital:
Dermoplast (and, if not, I'll just pick up on way home)
Mesh underwear

That's all I can recall right now.

There's a great blog about this on Lucie's List. The exact post is here. She also put together a post-delivery survival kit list on amazon. Find it here.

I've got my recovery stash almost finished!

  • 6 pairs black panties
  • Nipple butter (from Earth Angel Mama)
  • Sitz bath (also from Earth Angel Mama)

Take as many of the giant ice pack pads you can get from the hospital, those things were amazing.

Snacks and drinks, movies or PVRed episodes of TV shows....we spent a LOT of time parked on the couch for the first few weeks and it was super handy to have a box of granola bars and some juice boxes on the end table for when I was stuck under a sleeping baby for hours at a time! :)

I guess technically now I should be SecondBabyMomma Lilypie Third Birthday tickers Lilypie First Birthday tickers

Things that I took home from the hospital:

  • sitz bath
  • peri bottle
  • ice packs

Things that I was already prepared with (or sent husband to the store on our first day home for):

  • nipple cream
  • lots of heavy absorbancy pads
  • Lansinoh soothie nipple gel pads
  • breast pads
  • stool softener
  • inflatable donut cushion (not sure if it was from the episiotomy or just regular swelling from vaginal birth, but I was extremely uncomfortable sitting for the first week - this was a lifesaver!!!)
  • underwear that I didn't mind tossing

Absolutely have to have easy to eat snacks. I have sandwich crackers, pop tarts, string cheese, etc. Everything else everyone said plus:

Super absorbant pads soaked in witch hazel in the freezer...best advice EVER!!!

squirt bottle for warm water after using the bathroom

Everything everyone else said, although I cannot recommend freezing meals ahead of time enough.

But also I much preferred cloth breast pads. I found the disposable ones got sweaty in the heat. I liked cotton ones best, but it perhaps depends on how leaky you are. So you might like to have some of each, to try out.

Ok sitz bath..... something like this?

http://www.amazon.com/Carex-Health-Brands-P70800-Sitz/dp/B0000533E1/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1352993980&sr=1-2

Also I've never heard of dermoplast.  I assume it's to help with any tearing?

These lists are making feel really unprepared!! :)

Demoplast is a 1st aid spray that helps with "scrapes and cuts".  It has some pain releiver in it to help with the soreness down there especially if you tear or had stitches.  It was seriously a life saver for me.  I was able to take a can home from the hospital.

Also one PP mentioned, you will want a peri wash bottle (squirt bottle) for warm water after and or during you use the restroom.  You will not be wanting to wipe with TP if you can at all avoid it.  Plus it felt nice and helps keep you clean.

All good advice. The easy meals, snacks on hand, and personal care items for sure. Check to see maybe what your hospital sends home with you.  The sitz bath and peri spray bottle were available for our stay in hospital and then we were encouraged to take them home and continue to use them.  All the previous ladies gave good lists so I won't repeat it all.

Getting up and sitting down were the worst part of the soreness for me. Make sure your dining room chair has a nice cushion for you to sit on.

The stool softener my hospital gave me was dulcolax.
