newborn on vacation?

Are any of you planning a trip or vacation shortly after baby is born?

We are thinking of taking a 6 day trip to Disney as a Christmas present to DD in late Febuary/early March. Plane ride and hotel stay.

Baby #2 will be little over a month old at the time.

We took DD on a plane at 6 months old and she was pretty good. She was excellent the whole vacation but it was just a family beach vacation, so not a lot of running around.

Just curious!

I flew with DS at 3½ weeks. He slept the entire way. No problems at all. I breastfed during takeoff and landing to prevent his ears from clogging.

I'm a FTM, so not speaking from experience, but I have several friends who have travelled/flown with newborns and they said it wasn't a problem at all, because at that age they sleep so much already. I'm considering flying for a trip about a month and a half after LO is born.

I'm supposed to be going to my friends wedding March 7th so Eloise should be about 8 weeks old then but I'm waiting to buy tickets because if she comes late I really don't want to fly with her when she's younger than 8 weeks. I'm going to get a flybaby because it looks like it'll be really helpful, especially because I'll be flying alone.

You guys are gutsy! I'm jealous. Third time mom here and have been to Disney several times and can't imagine going with a one-month old. Too many germs on the plane and Disney can get really hectic. Plus if you're going to need to pump, that will be a pain in the ass.

We HAVE to visit my husbands parents in the Dominican Republic during my maternity leave. I love them with all my heart but I am not the least bit excited about taking a newborn on a plane. I'm going to wait until after my PP checkup. It would break my husbands heart if I boycotted. I wouldn't mind flying somewhere in the US maybe because the closest hospital is 2 hours away from their house.

I think so much depends on your baby, which you can't predict.  A lot of people say their newborns sleep all of the time and it's totally fine, but my baby does NOT sleep all of the time and at 5.5 weeks, there hasn't been a single day since she was born that it would have been anything but a nightmare to fly with her, or spend any amount of time walking around WDW.  She usually lasts about 30 minutes on our outings.

However, I don't think you'd need to worry about pumping, since you'll have the baby there with you, and if BFing is working well for you (another thing you can't predict) you might have better luck with soothing your baby than I do.  To me this is one of those decisions where you have to ask yourself how badly you need to make the trip, and if it's worth the possibility that it will not go well.

We have flown with Ds the times. At 6 weeks 6 months and 1.5 years. The trip at 6 weeks was by far the easiest. He nursed and slept. I d do it again on a heartbeat with a young baby

After having the colicky baby from hell the first time around, I'm not planning on traveling any time soon after #2 is born. Plus, a germy airplane during flu season doesn't sound like fun to me.

This. DS would have been a nightmare. Not to mention the crowds/germs that time of year.

I'd only worry about the plane.  However, I think if you prepare the right way - full belly, clean diaper, etc.  ... It will probably be fine!  I'd certainly rather take a newborn than a toddler! Haha

If you ask the women on the IB board they will almost all tell you that flying this early is the easiest time. <don't worry about "germy" plane's, the air in them is cleaner than the air at the mall because it has to go through a purifier all the time. I'd bring a baby carrier like a moby or a ring sling with you for the trip that you've learned to breasfeed in, it'll make those I have to eat right here moments much easier :)

With my DS, this would have been a horrific nightmare. But as you already know, they're all different! I definitely know people who have taken babies that young places and been totally fine.

If you fly with a newborn baby, know that they will not make you take a baby out of a wrap/sling to go through security, they will swab your hands. You can check the stroller and forget it. They will also allow fluids (breast milk, etc) in a baby's bottle or cup through security. Take your boppy or some such to rest the infant on your lap more comfortably. Take your nursing cover and breast feed, or give a bottle (whatever you are doing), during take off and landing to ease the pressure on the ears. Swallowing does the trick.
