Sciatica?

Ugh. Welcome new pregnancy symptom. I have sharp pain that starts on my lower back, near my butt, on one side. It's worse when I walk or stand. Dr. Google seems to think it is sciatica and that it's likely pregnancy related due to the baby's position.

I've heard of this before when I was pregnant with my girls, but never experienced it.

Anyone else? What are you doing to alleviate? Do chiropractors help? I read online that you are supposed to try lying on the opposite side of the pain. How long does it last?  I can't imagine being like this for the next 9 weeks...

I have had it since about 13 weeks. Sometimes it paralyze me in bed and I can't roll over one way or the other without my husband helping me. Mine is really only on the right side and seems to also be aggravated when I move my right leg at night in bed. I use a heating pad but nothing really seems to make it go away fully.

I've been going to the chiro for the last couple weeks. I had pain at the base of my spine on the right side...

She's been adjusting my sacrum (or tailbone) that was out of line. She could tell it the first time I went, before I mentioned it. And after that adjustment she applies counterpressure on my ligaments at the front of my lower belly. Seems to help.

Worth a try if you have a trusted chiropractor!

I have this too - the pains are relatively quick but very sharp.  My doc said its due to the positioning of the baby and there isn't really much that will make it go away.  I had a prenatal massage which helped for a few days - and another doc mentioned a band that goes across your belly may help, but I have a feeling the only thing that will really help is getting the baby out.

I was planning on working full time until delivery, but if this keeps up I'm going to have to seriously reconsider...Crying

What you have definitely sounds like sciatica. I didnt have sciatica with DD but this time around man oh man it's bad! You can try and get a massage and ask them to focus on the lower back and buttocks (where your back jeans pocket would be).. I have my husband push kind of deeply when the pain is bad. Stretching can help too and a hot shower.

Pelvic rocks and chiropractic care should help.

I had it and told my doctor and was referred to physical therapy, totally helped. Also was given a belt to wear which made me feel better. I was told ice is actually better for it cause the muscles are inflamed with the pain, I used to sit on the soft flexible ice packs and that would feel so good.

This exactly for me, as well.  It's only on my right and can be paralyzing in bed.  I take a nice, fairly hot (not boiling) bath every night which helps alleviate sciatic and back pain some in general, but I don't think there's much else you can do besides rest.

I have had this for a while now but it seems to be getting worse.  I asked 3 different OBs in my practice and they all said not much can be done except rest/heating pad.  They didn't suggest a chiropractor but said I could do it if I wanted to.

Some days are worse than others and some spans (hours of the day) are worse than others.  I can't attribute it to anything.  Sometimes after I've been sitting at my desk for just 20 minutes, I get up and limp all the way down the hall because it hurts so bad.

I'm considering trying the chiropractor just for the reason you said - there's too much time left to suck it up.

I began having this for the past 3 wks and I find walking it out sometimes work. I find most of the time though it happens when I sleep and flipping to the other side helps but doesn't fully alleviate the pain. I just recently asked my dr about this and she told me to slightly push baby over and baby will most likely reposition himself, so far it is working for me. Hope this helps.

OP, I've had what you're describing for about a month and my OB said it was sciatic. I have to sit for work all day, so it bothers me most of the day. The only things I've found that work are lying on the other side (at night), warm baths, tylenol if it gets bad enough. OB said I could use a belly band if it was bad enough (but it may or may not help) and I'm sure I could see a chiropractor but my insurance wouldn't cover it and I have enough out-of-pocket expenses with the GD right now...so basically he told me I'd have to tough it out till delivery. Sorry.

sounds right to me. I have had random sharp shooting pain down my back and right leg since Second Tri. When I asked my OB about it, thats what it was. Then it changes to a dull cramp, as opposed to a quick sharp pain.

It went away for a few weeks/months as she said it would, but now the cramping is back.

I wish i knew how to fix it.... but i don't. A pillow between the legs at night seems to make it worse for me. I am just trying to stay active without over-doing it.

I had it during 2nd trimester also. Mine went away slowly after I started paying attention to what made it hurt. I stopped sleeping on that side and I started tightening up my muscles before standing/rolling over/making any major movement, which actually seemed to help a lot. My Dr. told me that because my joints are looser it makes pinched nerves more likely and so to counteract that by tightening my muscles. Good luck!

I've found that keeping active is actually really helpful, vs. staying in bed, which makes it much worse.   Get up out of your chair at work at least every 1/2 hour, walk around, stretch, etc.   Keep moving on weekends, too.    Don't let your muscles freeze up!   They will kind of try to 'brace' that area, and then it's a domino effect of pain.  Tylenol and cold packs do help (inflammation, pain signals, etc.)

I personally do not believe a chiropractor would really help.
